Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection explains that over time creatures that are more adaptable to changing environments thrive, and those that don't become extinct. Science is all about the process of biological evolutionary change.

What is Evolution?

The word evolution has many nonscientific meanings, such as "progress" or "descent with modification." Scientifically it refers to a change in the characteristics of living things (or species) over time. In terms of biology the change is due to natural selection and genetic drift.

Evolution is the central tenet of modern biology. It is a well-supported theory that has stood the test of time and thousands of scientific experiments. Unlike many other scientific theories such as the Copernican theory or the germ theory of disease, evolution does not address issues of religious belief or God's existence.

Early evolutionists, such as Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that certain physical characteristics were predetermined to change, in a gradual manner, over time. They called this the "Ladder of Nature" or the scala naturae. Charles Lyell used the term to describe this concept in his Principles of Geology, first published in 1833.

Darwin revealed his theory of evolution in his book On the Origin of Species published in the early 1800s. It states that all species of organisms have an ancestry that can be proven through fossils and other lines of evidence. This is the modern view of evolution, and is supported by numerous lines of research in science which includes molecular genetics.

While scientists don't know exactly how organisms evolved however they are sure that the evolution of life on earth is a result of natural selection and genetic drift. People with traits that are advantageous are more likely to survive and reproduce, and they pass their genes on to the next generation. Over time the gene pool gradually changes and evolves into new species.

Certain scientists also use the term evolution to describe large-scale evolutionary changes such as the creation of the new species from an ancestral species. Others, like population geneticists, define the term "evolution" more broadly, referring to an overall change in allele frequencies over generations. Both definitions are acceptable and precise however, some scientists claim that the definition of allele frequency is lacking essential aspects of the evolution process.

Origins of Life

A key step in evolution is the development of life. This happens when living systems begin to develop at the micro level - within individual cells, for example.

The origins of life is a topic in many disciplines, including biology, chemistry and geology. The question of how living things started is of particular importance in science due to it being an important challenge to the theory of evolution. It is often referred to as "the mystery of life" or "abiogenesis."

Most of these changes are neither harmful nor even harmful to the organism, however, a small proportion of them can be beneficial to the longevity and reproduction of the species, thus increasing their frequency in the population over time. Humans have developed a range of traits over time such as bipedalism, use of fire and advanced tools. It's only within the last 100,000 years that we have developed the majority of our essential traits. These include language, large brain, the ability to build and use sophisticated tools, and a the diversity of our culture.

The process of evolution occurs when genetic changes allow members of a population to better adapt to their environment. Natural selection is the process that triggers this adaptation. Certain traits are preferred over others. The more adapted are more likely to pass their genes on to the next generation. This is the way all species evolve and the basis of the theory of evolution.

Scientists refer to it as the "law of Natural Selection." The law states that species which have an ancestor in common will tend to develop similar characteristics over time. This is because these traits allow them to live and reproduce in their environments.

All organisms have DNA molecules, which is the source of information that helps direct their growth and development.
