The Career

The professional surfing career -- the specific combination of the competitive results whose ranking determines whether the surfer is on the Championship Tour, the specific sponsorship relationships whose income supplements the prize money, and the specific travel that the competition calendar requires -- is the accountability journalism of what the professional pursuit of surfing produces for the people who pursue it.

The Reality

The reality: the Championship Tour consists of approximately 40 men and 17 women whose competitive results are good enough to hold a spot on the tour. The prize money for the Championship Tour events ranges from approximately 50,000 to 200,000 dollars total per event. The sponsorship that the best CT surfers receive supplements the prize money substantially; the sponsorship that the CT surfer outside the top 15 receives is more modest.
