I like Jack. And Jessica Lange is red hot in this film.

I don't know why, but my strongest memory for this film is the ravings for it in Playboy as best picture of the year. I can't disagree more that it is that good, but it shouldn't be forgotten. The book is a classic, that has never been fully realized. The three parts of the film that are important are: the connection between the two as a sexual bond, the intricacy of the plot to kill the husband, and the social themes of depression era haves and have nots. This film does get the sexual lust very well. This movie is georgeous and well acted. This may be the best use of this mid 80's Warner Film Stock period. That being said, like other reviewers have pointed out, there is not a wide screen formatted version of this film that exists. its such a waste. The plot to kill the husband and the legal technicalities are so garbled in this version that it almost requires the audience to already know the story. By the time she dies at the end of the film, there isn't the connection that the poor killed the rich and are paying for their sins. There isn't even a mention of what Happens to Jack, that he gets tried for murdering his wife, even though it was an accident. This movie chooses to focus on the loss of his love, his flame. Just love, lust and loss. There is no connection or reasoning for it. more of a you do what you want and sit happens approach to appeal to a hippie audience. I also didn't fully get the resentment of the upper class from these two finding a bond, or remorse for what they would do, daring fate to catch up with them. This movie is all about heat, and beauty. But it has both in spades.

After numerous delays for over a year, this film is finally released on Blu-ray. The moody, amber-toned photography of Sven Nykvist is seen to its best advantage and the film looks great. Apparently, some critics have mentioned that the film is tightly compressed but I didn't notice any defects on my 40 inch screen. Viewers with screens over 65 inches may notice artifacts and noise. The film itself is a sometimes slow moving and episodic remake and one that is much different from the 1946 original. This one has a totally different ending and the film focuses more on the "love story" aspect over the criminal. It may not have the hard-edged film noir characteristic of the earlier film but this one is much steamier (the famous kitchen table sex scene initially got the film an "X" rating). Jack Nicholson, although a tad too old for the role, is great in the lead role. The film though belongs to Jessica Lange, whose intense, smoldering characterization, put her on the map as a serious actress. Her only prior film work had been "King Kong" and a few minor roles. This film opened the door to her getting "Frances" and subsequent roles that justly her position as one of the best actresses in the business. A scene specific commentary is provided by director Bob Rafelson, Jack Nicholson and David Mamet and runs about 80 minutes. It is an interesting commentary with some surprising facts (such as Meryl Streep had tested for the role and was the first choice until Lange came on board). That said, I think the cover art is the tackiest I've ever seen!

I ordinarily don't like remakes....most of them are stinkers in my opinion (1998's Psycho was a really horrible remake), but I actually enjoyed this one thanks to top notch performances by Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange as Frank and Cora. It follows the basic story from James M. Cain's novel....drifter Frank Chambers (Nicholson) stops by a local diner run by a Greek man named Nick who offers him a job as mechanic. Frank is at first reluctant to take the job, but one look at the Greek's wife, Cora, and he changes his mind and starts right away. It isn't long before he and Cora start up a sizzling affair. Frank convinces Cora to run away with him, but Cora gets cold feet and wants to stay at the diner. She convinces him that it would be better to just murder Nick so they can be together and keep the diner....however fate throws in more than one monkey wrench in their plans.... I loved the 1946 original but I also really love this version....if I have one disappointment with the 1981 film is that it doesn't quite end like the original movie and the novel did. Justice needed to be served for BOTH characters not just one of them. Why the filmmakers didn't do this I don't know. Though I suppose of the two of them Cora probably deserved the comeuppance the most since it was HER idea to kill her husband. But be that as it may, it's still a damn fine movie in its own right. Highly recommend it.

Jessica Lange and Jack Nicholson star in a very dark tale of two lovers who sought freedom from their grim, quietly desperate lives in each other's arms. Unfortunately, their quest to remain together leads to the destruction of several lives, and quite possibly their own. The movie is primarily set in a rural area, where Lange's character works at a small roadside diner owned by her husband, a Greek immigrant. One of the most important elements of the film is that it never really demonizes the antagonists, and this is true with respect to the husband character - he has his faults, but he doesnt appear to be overly domineering or abusive. In any event, as fate would have it, one day a drifter appears at the diner, Nicholson's character, and soon he and Lange are making love on her kitchen work table, in one of several extremely graphic sex scenes which are peppered throughout the movie. Now, only Lange's husband stands in the way, and Nicholson and Lange decide to get rid of him. The rest of the movie depicts their attempts on the husband's life and the consequences of their actions, without judgment from the filmmakers, as the story moves to its ultimate, and ultimately shocking, conclusion. The movie does drag at points, and some of the characters seem unnecessary, but the point is never lost on the audience - both fate and lust, while they draw two people together magnetically, can spell disaster.

While it is a well-made film on a technical level and all of the performances were excellent, there was a certain something missing from this remake that left me wanting. Based on the novel by James Cain, the story is about a drifter, Frank Chambers (Jack Nicholson), who visits a rural diner run by Nick Papadakis and his wife Cora (Jessica Lange). Frank and Cora begin an affair and then attempt to kill Cora's husband, but fail. In true film noir fashion, fate eventually gets its way and tragedy befalls the two lovers in an unexpected way. For me, the 1946 film adaptation starring John Garfield and Lana Turner stands as one of the best film noirs ever, and there was almost nothing this 1981 remake could have done to really live up to that. The only new or different thing this adaptation does is ramp up the sexual content and violence, and mixes them in a way that was kind of off-putting at times. Perhaps it was this way in Cain's novel, but the way in which sex and violence are intertwined in this film was more than a little disturbing. With that, and a slight adjustment to the ending (and of course, being in color), it hews fairly closely to the story as presented in the 1946 original. One might ask, "What was the point?" and you'd be perfectly justified in asking that. I have no idea what possessed them produce this remake, but for what it's worth it's not a bad film. However, if forced to choose between this and the 1946 version, I'd pick the 1946 version every time. This one was just a little too nihilistic and lacked emotional depth.

My recommendation: read the book first, then watch this version of the film. #1: no matter what age you are, the novel is utterly worth reading and how far before his time the author dared to write! #2: if you love the book and are fed up with what Hollywood does to those books you love, watch this film anyway. Yes, there are some deviances from the book, but few. And OMG, the setting is so utterly what I envisioned in my mind for the Depression era in that part of the USA. Check out Jessica Lange doing her sitting thing in the bus station, legs apart, no lady would sit that way! Check out the sex scenes that Mr. Caine put in the book without enough information for visuals, but this film provides without being 'tacky'. If you ever liked Jack Nicholson in any one film and haven't seen this one, then you must watch this one. These two actors are steamy and nailed the parts IMHO .... if, you read the book. Great book, good film that does not let the book down.
