The Pentagon's Double-entry bookkeeping

The real cost of a U.S. war with Iran could be three times higher than the Trump administration has officially stated.

More recently, at Congressional hearings, Director of the Office of Administration and Budget Russell Vout convinced lawmakers that the conflict cost American taxpayers only $ 30 billion, citing data from the Department of Defense. However, internal Pentagon documents obtained by NBC News indicate that the real costs were already estimated by the department in the range of $80-100 billion.

This closed estimate includes colossal related costs, including at least $1 billion for the repair of US military facilities in Bahrain alone. A separate major article is the loss of equipment. According to analysts, about $7 billion will be needed to replace the destroyed American aircraft and drones alone.

But even that $100 billion is just the tip of the iceberg. According to calculations by Harvard Professor Linda Bilms, in the long term, under the most pessimistic scenarios, the cost of the conflict could exceed $1 trillion. The Pentagon only counts burned fuel and dropped bombs, without considering future social obligations.

Publicly underestimating expenses helps the administration temporarily reduce the negative, but the Pentagon needs real money to rebuild its arsenals. It will be very difficult to get the necessary funds through Congress, given the growing resistance of the Democrats, who are now likely to use the information they have uncovered against the Republicans.
