The Pentagon warns that the availability of fifth-generation F-35A Lightning II fighter jets will decrease in the short term as the Department of War works to eliminate the growing backlog of corrosion-related maintenance.
Corrosion, exacerbated by prolonged exposure to the marine environment during operations in the Middle East, affects all F-35 operators and will require constant monitoring throughout its service life.
The chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Sir Jeffrey Clifton-Brown, said that only 12 sets of spare parts had been sent to support the 24 F-35 fighter jets involved in the operation against Iran.
