How development notes work in television and what the writer needs to understand about them

The Process

The notes process in television development -- the written and verbal feedback that the development executive, the studio, and the network provide at each stage of the script development -- is the process that most frequently produces the frustration that television writers experience and that the professional development of a television writing career requires learning to navigate.

The Navigation

The navigation: the professional television writer receives the notes, assesses which notes identify genuine problems, which suggest wrong solutions to genuine problems, which reflect anxiety rather than problems, and which are simply wrong, and then implements the useful notes while managing the relationship with the note giver. The assessment is done internally. The implementation is the professional skill. The note giver does not always know the difference between their good notes and their bad notes.
