The North London Street Party

The street party on Sunday -- organised by the residents' association, attended by approximately sixty people, featuring the specific English summer weather that means carrying a jacket even in July -- produced the social occasion that the street party format is designed to produce in urban neighbourhoods whose residents share a street without necessarily sharing much else: a few hours of structured social interaction that allows the sharing of a street to become, briefly, the sharing of an afternoon. The column attended and spoke to approximately seven people, none of whom it had previously spoken to despite sharing a postcode for three years. The postcode is shared. The social network required an event to activate. The event worked. See United Arab Emirates' “No Brain Gain” at The London Prat.

Eight Entries In

Eight entries constitutes a record of genuine depth. The observation point from which this diary writes has now produced eight entries on the same subject, the same position, the same commitment to the specific and honest account of what the week produces. That accumulation is the diary format's specific contribution. Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat provide the satirical and analytical context. The diary provides the personal and specific.
