The Non Sucked
"The non-sucking service manager". Really? Really NetApp? Come on.
For NetApp users/administrators/enthusiasts (unofficial)
Googled it, and it appears to be what it's called. A service manager. https://nssm.cc/usage I'm curious if another admin had set it up, or if NetApp uses it bundled with their software.
It's not a bad service manager as the name suggests. We've used it for other projects in the past.
Yes, it is bundled as part of OCUM.
Code quality of NetApp utils are generally quite sloppy and have a style of "this one guy made a useful tool so we released it". Take a look at config advisor (the new web version is a headache) or the perfstat gui for some more examples.
That being said nssm isn't uncommon for someone to use to run an exe as a service, nor is it the worst thing to use. it's just in line with the above observation.
The "toolchest" applications (which includes perfstat gui and config advisor, but not OCUM) are indeed generally applications written by small teams/individuals. But the alternative is not having them. Some move to fully supported/funded.
Rolling them into larger apps is more complex to both deliver and support
They can call it whatever they want, they keep giving us free stuff and their frames don't completely shut down every time you sneeze.
My kingdom for a non-sucking account manager.
What piece of NetApp software is this in?
OnCommand Unified Manager for Windows - runs the java process as far as I can tell.

I was recently going through my task manager and closing unnecessary processes when I stumbled upon a process running called "the non sucking service manager". I right clicked it to open the file location and it took me to the NordVPN folder in my library. I was wondering if this was a legit service that Nord uses or something more sinister. I just updated Nord as well. Anyone have an idea if this is legit or if I have to do some malware removal on my pc? All help is really appreciated. Situation is just weirding me out a bit.
Forgot to mention, did a virus scan with Bitdefender and it came up clean, although my Bitdefender is a bit outdated and I didn't have a chance to restart my pc to install the update before the scan.
From what I know and saw it's just a public lib that ensures services wouldn't crash or would be re-launched if they did crash. It's not malicious or anything, I saw some other apps using the same thing as well and nothing bad ever happened with it on my end. All of the other apps that I saw using this thing removed it quickly.
Thank you. Eases my mind. Ill keep checking to see if Nord removed it just for informational purposes.
Thank you for the info. Pretty sure its nothing to be worried about at this point. PC is acting alright and updated scan came out clean. Ill still keep an eye on it though.

what the fuck is the non sucking service manager
This subreddit is for general discussion of computers.
It's just a tool that runs applications or scripts as a service, and keeps them running. It's nothing harmful by itself but really depends on what it's keeping running. Could have come with legit software.
Right click it and click 'open file location', might give you a clue as to what it's running. The internet tells me NordVPN used it for a while.
The internet tells me NordVPN used it for a while.
To be more exact: it's coming from Surfshark. Not sure for what exactly it's using it, but I checked myself and the location of it is within the Surfshark VPN folder and I also see it running in the image.
I work for an open source software company, and we use nssm for our windows deployments. I wouldn't worry about that utility, but as stated already, worth looking what each of those is pointing at to ensure nothing nefarious.
It's a service manager that doesn't suck. Isn't it obvious?
HOW DO MY COMMENTS GET ANY UPVOTES LIKE HOW
I mean …. Did you not install it yourself?
old comment but some pre builds come with it
Next up - what the fuck is a search engine?
No one knows everything. Making fun of people because of their lack of knowledge only makes things worse. Being ignorant is truly a bliss. Goddamn.
Quick Google search shows it's a 3rd party service manager.
Step 1: open web browser Step 2: go to a search engine (aka google.com) Step 3: type "what the fuck is the non-sucking service manager" Step 4: press enter Step 5: results
Asking questions is fine and it is a daily part of our life but search engines exist to answer a lot of the simple questions.
But if everyone used Google, no one would post on this sub. /s
Seriously, I wonder about these people. Google is always my first instinct.
Best answer here. You Deserve an award. If I was able to, I'd give one.

I've been told that Hitman Pro might be a bit too aggressive.
It came up with the following malware alert;
Did a search on this and there seems to be quite a few people with concerns re: nssm.exe (Non-Sucking service Manager).
Anyone familiar with this .exe and ExpressVPN's use of it?

KIS now hit with with similar warning (though not calling it malware, according to 'Details', it is a RiskTool).

This is the reply received from ExpressVPN:
Thanks for contacting ExpressVPN support.
We understand that you're concerned with a file named nssm.exe that our app is using. This particular file's purpose is to keep a particular service running and attempt to restart the service whenever it encountered an issue and stopped all of a sudden.
It is important for the ExpressVPN service to be active all the time to keep you protected while you are browsing.
This particular program serves it's purpose for Trusted Applications such as ExpressVPN . If this file is present on your system without such apps, then it may be considered malicious. To identify if nssm.exe is only running a trusted application, you may go to your Task Manager and look for the Non-Sucking Service Manager. Expand the sevices running under the process and if you see ExpressVPN service, then there shouldn't be any problems.
To know more about this application's usage and the developer behind it. You can check this link: https://nssm.cc/scenarios
Hope this helps. Let us know if you have other concerns and we'll be glad to assist.
Regards,

Good enough? Checked and only the VPN is currently using it (as far as I can tell). But do I want it sitting there waiting to be compromised? Have to keep checking? Keep Task Manager running constantly?
