Upgrades to items are a method to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type it can increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity, as well as boost other stats.
Upgrades to gear in The War Within requires a certain number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a certain amount.
Item Level
When an item is upgraded, its base stats increase in value. This value is the total of all of its leveled up perks (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive depending on who you hire and what you decide to do. This is due to the variety of perks that must be changed in order to upgrade an item.
It can also be used as a gating requirement while queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It also serves as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is capped at the lower levels). Players can upgrade an item to a specific stat, or reroll affixes. The range of stats determined by the item's level. However each item will have at least one stat within the same range, unless it's a unique item, or an item that has a God Roll from a boss in a raid.
This is another thing that could be altered by adding an option to upgrade the equipment without rerolling the affixes, or selecting which stats to increase. But as with base equipment, this would need to be performed on a per-item basis, and the interface for item comparison would not display all the possible stats that were gained or lost at the same time.
Item Luck
The Luck stat for a player adds up to increase the odds of finding items as well as the properties that appear on loot drops and the strength of those properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player the chance to upgrade their equipment earlier in the game. This is especially useful in the early game, since players tend to prioritize the scaling of weapons and defenses over raw damage gains.
In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chances of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance that increases with each item level and can be further enhanced through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
Weapons, shields, and armor can spawn or be crafted using the Luck property, with an initial value of 40. These items can then be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to give +40 Luck, or to increase the existing Luck of an item, up to 140.
Additionally some items, like the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow can be used to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items are available in the shops or made using the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Upgrades to items can be expensive and not all upgrades will succeed. However, there are item upgrade which allow players to increase their chance of success or stop them from losing an item if the upgrade is unsuccessful.
When you upgrade an item the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of successfully upgrading the item, and it can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limits to the extent to which success rates can be increased, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing can't be greater than 100%..
The luck of an item may influence the success of an upgrade. Every item has an initial success rate of 25%, and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by an additional five percent.
It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the items in the inventory, so enchantment glint and other effects could be masked by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
