The New York Food Insecurity Problem

What the food insecurity data shows about who is hungry in New York City and why

The Scale

Approximately 1.2 million New York City residents experience food insecurity in any given year, according to the most recent Hunger Free America data. The distribution of food insecurity across the city follows the economic geography: the South Bronx, Central Brooklyn, and East Harlem have the highest rates; the Upper East Side and Lower Manhattan have the lowest. The geography of hunger is the geography of poverty with a one-period lag.

The System

The food security system that the city and the network of food banks, pantries, and emergency food programmes operate: the Food Bank for New York City, the thousands of community-level food pantries, and the city-funded emergency food assistance programmes collectively address approximately 60 percent of the food need that the food insecurity data identifies. The 40 percent gap is the accountability question.
