I glanced over my left shoulder during a library poetry reading. One of the poets there, looked familiar, he looked like someone in my university English literature class. Yet, he was a she. She was wearing a skirt, high heels, and makeup. I looked closer. Yes, I was sure, it was the 6'4" tall classmate. Dressed in woman's clothes. This Francois Ozon directed movie, left me with the same feeling: what the heck is going on? In my real life occurrence, with a transgender, I just ignored the person except when it came time to listen to his, oops, I mean her, poem. When the poetry reading was over, I left not thinking twice. So what the guy was a transgender or cross dresser, whatever, I encountered more shocking facts of life when I grew up in the Bronx and Queens, NYC, and saw more shocking facts of life in Manhattan during the heyday of equal rights. In the end, I just hoped everyone who listened enjoyed my poem written in the Walt Whitman style of simplicity and clarity. Now back to this movie, The New Girlfriend, it was an interesting story of two childhood girlfriends. One dies at an early age, leaving a child behind, the other married but childless. The cusp of the movie has to do with David, the wife of the deceased woman. She's a cross dresser, who befriends, his wife's childhood friend. Yet instead of him going out in public as a man, he goes out in public with her dressed as a woman. So, what does she do? She shares grooming tips with her deceased friend's husband. This provokes laughter. She tells him the secret of putting on eyelash. Anas Demoustier checks in with a brilliant performance of someone who lost her childhood friend. And Roman Duris also struts his stuff on the screen. In the end, I expected such a movie from Francois Ozon. I've seen a couple of others of his films, briefs, and they raised my eyebrows. He has a different point of view when it comes to dealing with sex and sexuality in society. He's different. Yet it's that difference that makes his movies interesting. No typical ho hum, seen that so many times before, when it come to a Ozon movie. His movies are always an eye opener, as long as one is open-minded to his point of view. So what! If a guy dressed like a woman, it doesn't take money out of my pocket. I believe Just Let It Be. None of my business. In fact, poet dressed up as a woman, I found to be a crafty poet. When I saw him a couple of weeks later, in class, I ignored him, like we never saw each other before. That's how one survives in the city, ignore almost everything.

I am 70 years old. A M-T-F transgender person not unlike the principle character. It is important to understand that under the transgender umbrella there are many personalities. Variety is just a natural characterization by nature. No God, no afterlife, this is all you get. You can let others spoil it for you with their desire to control you using different theological (religion) observations, rules, and control tools. But it all boils down to the fact that we do not really know what may lie ahead if anything. We can all be moral, ethical beings without someone demanding homage to the unknown. This production addresses in my opinion the humanity of being human. I do not fail to recognize the fact that the character "Gilles," is left without his partner "Claire." That she has opted to stay with "Virginia," help raise the current daughter from Virginia's previous marriage and "Claire" to be pregnant carrying a child of their making. There are many complications to such an arrangement in real life. The social aspects are mind numbing. For many this will be too much. It is a very liberal view of the world with no room for conservative thinking. Open mindedness is not exactly a conservative characteristic. Once you remove the clothes and make-up, all you see are two people making the discovery of a strong personal attachment that cannot be denied. French films often do so much more better than USA Hollywood can do. There is a strong character involvement that plays out so as to bring you into this drama and make you part of their dilemma. What to do if anything is clearly a strong aspect of this production. I am happy to see that it was treated with dignity throughout the viewing time.

I think I am accustomed to the overacting of Hollywood stars. The actors here are far less flashy and dramatic, requiring the viewer to sort of just go along with no idea how the next scene will unfold. What a gift. I think the nebulous nature of these characters' sexual orientation and gender identification is probably more true to life than the tidy, predictable films we sometimes get to see where you are either gay or straight, male or female, born or self-created and everyone knows how it will end. Brava for a film that attempts to show the complexities of humanity in a more realistic and evolving way. And how refreshing not to have to endure the painful self-loathing and denial that mainstream media queers seem to require before they get around to accepting themselves and each other! (Hands clapping for mom-in-law, too.) Would that life was not so complicated, but since it is, here's a toast to the folks who are highlighting the under-represented folk and helping us feel like movies are not only made for serving the needs of a relatively small slice of society.

This movie was beyond lovely! At first, Claire is in awe and in the shadow of Laura all her life. I felt as though Laura did not truly let Claire in, but once she passed and the friendship between Virginia and Claire began to grow and deepen, a true love and understanding existing. I felt as though their love and friendship was not only on the adult level, but also at the heart of a child like true best friends. At the end, I had to think hard about it, but I believe she chose Virginia and to have a life with Virginia and little Lucie. All through the movie when Claire asks Virginia how to live as a woman and how as a parent to Lucie, Claire was the perfect transition for that. She whole-heartedly accepted Virginia for who she was and also, in turn, had the family she wanted. I only felt sad for Guille, who was no longer needed, but only needed as the role of the traditional conservative person how things are supposed to be. I felt sad for him as he saw at the end the realization of everything.

In a world where the former United States hasn't had a President with even partial male facial appearance since William Howard Taft in 1913 and every such subsequent "male" has adopted lesbian supremacist transvestite facial appearance, the notion of transvestitism for the sake of a baby missing her mother is by no means strange. Since it was a French film, there was no link to the criminal brutal taxation of "singles" in the United States to support "marrieds" of whatever gender mix and their antisocial population littering. In its favor, the film did not include the typical lesbian use of object rape con dumbs to gather sperm for insemination without ever relating to a male person, Even so, what the film is selling, LGBT relationships, can't be rated above three stars by a victim of their felony abrogation since 1986-87 via object rape con dumbs of my own Article I US Constitution Amendments civil right to practice my own hetero religion.

Good movie, and respectful for the most part. I especially appreciate that while the question 'Why are you this way?' was asked (and it's a typical question to receive and even inflict on oneself), the answer was effectively left at not really sure, and in the end, who cares - I am who I am. On the other hand, the wedding dress thing midway through was super creepy. That...shouldn't have been in there. It could've have been a 5-star without that. Why do trans people always have to be not only fetishized, but made out to be perverted?

The movie shares the struggle transgender individuals have with societies gender normative limitations and expectations, through the eyes of Claire who makes very negative associations at first but then comes to terms with her own sexuality in the process. I don't care for French films because they are often over sexualized but this movie focuses on Virginia's transition and self acceptance not just sex. I would say that as a feminist this notion that Virginia's coming out is wrapped around Claire's approval is insulting to the struggle trans-women must face. The other issue with the movie is that it seems to confuse identity and sexuality by constantly connecting them. All in all it is pleasant to watch and will make you think, which is a sign of a great movie!

I would have given 5 stars but for the VERY ambiguous ending. Too much is left for imagination as to the evolution of the relationships involved..Great story of realization of who we are vs who we think we are. I have watched a dozen times looking for other sign or signals as to what the author is trying to say and they fail miserably. Suddenly in the last minute of the film its 7 years later with no actual status of the adult characters.... sucks.
