What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

The keys are available at an auto dealer or copied in the locksmith's shop. The method of programming the key is different for each manufacturer and involves turning the key to the off position, without triggering the engine, and then removing it within a certain time period.

Transponder Codes

When a transponder is questioned it transmits an encoded signal that is accompanied by an eight-digit code. This signal is known as a SQUAWK code and it is the basis of identification of aircraft on radar screens. It is also used to relay an exact message to the air traffic control system in an emergency situation or to inform controllers of changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is unable speak to the radio. They are crucial for safe flying.

Every aircraft is equipped with a transponder that responds to radar interrogation with an identifier code. This enables ATC to locate the aircraft on a radar screen that is busy. The 17 digits of the VIN code are a combination of letters and numbers which can be decoded to reveal vital information regarding your car or truck.
