The Mick Tease
Inside The Actor’s Character of MICKEY with Kaitlin Olson
For the last 12 years, Kaitlin Olson has been the secret weapon of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia . Her Sweet Dee is the poster-wreck for physical comedy laced with raunch, acidic wit and unexpected depth (see: Season 6’s “Dee Gives Birth”). And now, the actress who should have been nominated for an Emmy years ago is trading South Philly for snotty Connecticut in Fox’s new farce, The Mick , about a two-bit disaster who inherits her married-good sister’s kids following a less-than-minor fraud situation.
And this time, she’s not just working it in front of the camera: Olson is also an executive producer and a proud one, at that. “There’s a way to make a show that is fresh and actually funny and the comedy is surprising without being just shock value,” she says of the sitcom’s edgy vibe. “And, I really think that that’s what we’re doing. I’ve said this a hundred times, but I really wanted to make a show on Fox that felt it belonged on cable.”
Being one of TV’s smartest funny people, Olson of course is promoting The Mick —set to bow on Sunday, January 1st before moving to its normal Tuesdays at 8:31/7:31c slot—with the same winking irreverence of the show itself. In this exclusive teaser, she delves into the process of bringing her character Mickey to life while also giving us a pretty good idea why Micky is probably the worst person anyone should leave their kids with.
The Mick , Series premiere, Sunday, Jan. 1 at 8/7c, Fox

Fox’s new comedy dangles the promise of outrageous high jinks just around the corner, but at its heart, it’s a conventional story, the misfit forced to become the parent to three wayward kids and, of course, become a better person.
Kaitlin Olson — best known as Sweet Dee on FXX’s “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” — stars as Mackenzie, also known as Mickey — a hard-luck hustler, who in the opening montage hilariously works her way through a supermarket, stuffing her mouth, huffing whipped cream and dusting her private area.
With her boyfriend Jimmy (Scott MacArthur), she drops in on her sister’s hoity-toity party in Greenwich, Conn. Sis married a billionaire, and while Mickey isn’t exactly uninvited, she is unexpected.
She gets off to a rough start with the young lady she tries to bum a smoke from — she turns out to be her 17-year-old niece, Sabrina (Sofia Black-D’Elia, “The Messengers”).
“I haven’t seen you since you were young,” Sabrina snarks at her auntie.
Thirteen-year-old nephew Chip (Thomas Barbusca) seems poised to take his place in the Trump administration. Ben (Jack Stanton), the youngest at 6? 5? — no one seems sure — is adorable and confused a lot.
The family reunion is rudely interrupted by the FBI, who raid the mansion and haul away Mickey’s sister and brother-in-law. Now she’s the adult in charge.
The press notes refer to Mickey as an “unapologetic degenerate,” and gosh that seems a bit harsh. She comes off like a misfit with a heart of gold. She’ll keep these kids flying straight, even if her methods are unconventional.
“I want to be the cool aunt. I want you to come with me with boy problems. Or girl problems. I don’t assume,” Mick says to Sabrina, pouring her another shot — dosed with sleeping medication — so the teen can’t go out.
Olson, who serves as co-executive producer here, gives the camera some of the best reactions to the mild chaos around her. Fans of FXX’s “Sunny” should have no fear. When that show returns for its 12th season Jan. 4, Olson will be back as Sweet Dee.
In upcoming episodes, Mickey vows to prevent Sabrina from having unprotected sex with her boyfriend, and then tries to throw the perfect party for Ben after his siblings forget the date.
Now I ask, is that the work of an unapologetic degenerate?
If this were FXX and Olson was in character as “Sunny’s” Sweet Dee, she’d be trying to sell the brats overseas.
That’s how a real degenerate would roll.
