An in-depth look at the ruthless Barker-Karpis gang as they trigger one of the most sensational and prolonged gunfights in the gangster era.
The Barker-Karpis Gang operated in the mid-West in the early 1930's, formed when Freddie Barker hooked up with Alvin Karpis while still in the Kansas State Penitentiary in 1931. Karpis was considered by many to be the most intelligent gangster of the era.

This quick documentary presents a shootout that occurred on January 16th, 1935 in the small town of Lake Weir, Florida when authorities tracked Freddie Barker and his mother Kate to a farmhouse in the area. With Freddie holding the authorities at bay using a Thompson machine gun, the lawmen attempted to position themselves to take out the criminals. Apparently some lucky shots by the officers shooting blindly into the farmhouse struck both Ma and her youngest son Freddie fatally, but it wasn't until a neighboring caretaker employed by the Barkers inspected the premises at the lawmen's request that the bodies were discovered.

Until catching this episode of 'Deadly Shootouts' I'd had no prior knowledge of the infamous Ma Barker, though the episode concludes by intimating that she wasn't much involved in the gang's activities and really had no criminal record to speak of. Because she died as a result of an FBI raid and it might not have been looked upon favorably by the public, Director J. Edgar Hoover manufactured a story about what a vicious criminal she was based on the rest of the gang's brutality.

What I haven't seen yet is the 1970 theatrical film cited in the story and directed by Roger Corman titled "Bloody Mama", loosely based on the history of Ma Barker and her sons. With Corman directing, I don't doubt that it's a cheaply made sensationalist film, but I'm inclined to check it out for that reason alone.
