How to think about London weather as a visitor and what to pack

|

By Fiona MacLeod, London travel journalist.

The Reality

The London weather reality for visitors: London averages approximately 106 days of rain per year, which sounds like a lot and is not as much as the stereotype implies. The rain tends to be light and intermittent rather than sustained, and the specific experience of London in the rain -- the specific smell of the city, the way the wet reflects the lights, the specific density of the pubs -- is an experience that many visitors find they prefer to the sunshine version of the same streets.

What to Pack

What to pack: the light waterproof jacket or packable cagoule is the single most useful piece of clothing the London visitor can bring, more useful than the umbrella that the wind renders unreliable. The layering system that the variable temperature of a London day requires is the second most useful preparation. The London visitor who arrives prepared to be occasionally rained on has a better visit than the visitor who wastes energy being surprised by it.

Fiona MacLeod Coverage

Fiona MacLeod covers the London weather question because the accountable travel journalism of London requires addressing the question that most visitors have and providing the practical information that turns the weather from a deterrent into a manageable dimension of the visit.
