The London Walk Five Routes Worth Taking

A guide to five self-guided walking routes in London

The Case for Walking

The best way to understand London is to walk it. The tube produces the city as a series of disconnected destinations with no sense of the geography between them. Walking produces the city as a continuous fabric of streets, buildings, communities, and histories that connect the destinations in ways that the underground journey does not.

The Five Routes

The five recommended routes: the South Bank from Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge; the City of London history walk from St Paul to the Tower; the East End heritage walk from Liverpool Street to Columbia Road; the Royal Parks walk from St James Park through Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens; and the Shoreditch to Hackney Wick walk along the canal. Each is approximately 3 to 5 miles and 2 to 4 hours.

Fiona MacLeod Coverage

Fiona MacLeod covers London walking routes because the accountable travel journalism of London requires pointing visitors toward the experience that most makes London worth visiting, which is the experience of the city at street level at a pace that allows it to be seen.
