It can also control your refrigerator, if you connect it to a smart plug, although we've seen mixed results with that.
SmartThings requires a hub, which is not cheap. Samsung offers a variety of ones - including the SmartThings Station, which you can attach to your router, and can be used as a nightlight. There's also a less expensive SmartThings Hub Dongle that can support Z-Wave and Zigbee, with Thread support to be added soon.
Once you've got your smart fridge connected to your smartphone, hub and fridge it's a breeze to use. SmartThings lets you control your refrigerator from anywhere. Notifications are sent to your phone when the refrigerator is opened or closed. You can create schedules, alter the temperature and set reminders.
SmartThings was one of the founding members of the Home Connectivity Alliance. This alliance is working to make major home appliances from different manufacturers compatible. In the near future you could control your Samsung washer/dryer, Electrolux oven, and LG TV through the same app.
Although it's not as widely accepted as Alexa or Google Assistant, SmartThings does have some major players on its roster, including Arlo, Nest, Belkin and Lifx. It's compatible with the Matter protocol, which allows accessories to be connected regardless of brand. The best option for most people is to combine Alexa and Google Assistant.
Family Hub
This refrigerator freezer is the most modern one you can find. It has a 21-inch touchscreen integrated into the door, and comes with a variety of smart features. You can access entertainment apps, make notes for family members (think big digital version of a notepad stuck to the fridge), check the weather and more, all thanks Samsung's own voice activation assistant, Bixby.
The touchscreen lets you manage your food and recipes. You can add ingredients directly through an app and see the contents of your fridge with internal cameras. You can also make an inventory list of items on the go and monitor foods to know when they'll expire. You can also use an app for recipes to read out the instructions while you cook.
Samsung has spent a whole year working on the Family Hub fridges based on feedback from customers. One of the major changes is that you can now set different profiles for every member of your household so they can tailor the information and apps they can access. It's still not quite as great as having Alexa integration built into your refrigerator however it's a step up on last year's model.
Besides its entertainment and grocery management capabilities, Family Hub also acts as a controller for Samsung's SmartThings platform. It can be used to control Matter-compatible devices, such as lights and plugs as well as locks.
Samsung's fridge has been around for a few years now and, although it offers a fair bit of features, the touchscreens aren't a must-have feature for most people. These are more of a fun, semi-frivolous accessory than anything else.
