The season finale of The Last of Us opens with Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) arriving at the outskirts of Jackson, Wyoming. After weeks of grueling travel, Ellie is hopeful—this could be the place where the Fireflies can create a cure from her immunity. Joel, however, is tense. He’s seen too much to trust anyone.

[Flashback: Joel’s Past]

A brief flashback reveals Joel’s darkest moment—losing Sarah. The pain in his eyes mirrors his fear of losing Ellie the same way.

[The Hospital: A Desperate Choice]

Joel and Ellie finally reach the Firefly base, but things go wrong fast. Marlene (Merle Dandridge) informs Joel that creating a cure will require sacrificing Ellie. Without hesitation, Joel’s protective instincts take over. What follows is a heart-pounding, brutal rampage through the hospital as Joel guns down anyone in his way.

Ellie, unconscious, never sees the truth.

[The Lie]

As they drive away, Ellie wakes up. Joel, with a shaky voice, tells her the Fireflies didn’t need her—that there were others like her, and a cure was impossible. Ellie studies his face, sensing something off.

'Swear to me. Swear to me that everything you said is true.'

Joel hesitates—just for a second—before answering. 'I swear.'

The screen fades to black as Ellie’s expression lingers—somewhere between trust and doubt.

The season ends with Joel and Ellie walking back toward Jackson. The world is still broken, but for now, they have each other. The question remains: Was Joel’s choice justified? And what happens when Ellie learns the truth?
