The L Word never shied away from nudity or sex. The series, about a group of lesbians living and loving in Los Angeles, was bold and frank in its portrayal of love scenes. As it turns out, the cast and crew took these very seriously. When EW reunited the cast, they talked love scenes with other women and doing sex scene research.
Mia Kirshner: These girls said that my breasts were the ninth character.
Jennifer Beals: Well, the ninth and the 10th.
Sarah Shahi: I will say this, in all seriousness: Doing love scenes with guys and girls, I much prefer doing them with girls because I feel like, as women, we naturally protected each other.
Beals : Do you guys remember that Rose [Troche, a co-executive producer on the show] made us a video?
Beals: We had to watch a sex video because we had to do all these sex scenes. So we could watch the video and see what worked and didn’t work and analyze why it didn’t work. It didn’t work if people weren’t fully committed to it.
Shahi: I could have used that viewing. My first day I got introduced to Kate [Moennig, who played Shane], and it’s like: “Kate, this is Sarah. Sarah, this is Kate. And so in this scene, Kate is going to be going down on you.” And it’s just like, Whoa!

While the original L Word series certainly had its flaws, the quality of its sex scenes was never one of them. In 2019, the series got its sequel, The L Word: Generation Q, and we have to admit we were skeptical that it would live up to the original. But two seasons in, the sex scenes in Gen Q might just top the earlier ones. Here’s a roundup of all 30 sex scenes in order of greatness.
After Finley hits on Rebecca at a bar, the two are on to something hot — until Finley gets sick and sexy times are abruptly canceled.
On their first night together, Nat and Alice get interrupted by Nat’s ex-wife, Gigi, but that doesn’t stop them from getting it on.
Nat has seven minutes before she has to leave the house, and Alice challenges her to do it in six. Their plans almost get thwarted by kids’ toys that are on the couch, but Alice pushes through.
Shane remembers hot sex with Quiara, but before we can get into it, she is awakened by texts from her friends on her 40h birthday.
Set to a poem by Alix Olson, Nat and Alice fool around in bed while Finley and Rebecca do it under the stars with a boob grab that gives us life. Gotta love those sex montages.
Shane’s ex Quiara wakes Shane up with a shag, and as seducing as this is, we’re quickly reminded of their impending divorce and a confession that Quiara is pregnant.
We don’t dislike this scene of Finley topping Tess in the backroom of a bar — but Tess is drunk after two years of sobriety and it’s clear that Finely has a drinking problem. It’s definitely erotic, but Tess and Finley have some work to do on themselves.
Exes Nat and Alice have an awkward run-in followed by car sex in which Alice notices that Nat has “some new moves.” Alice then orgasms with her head popping out of the sunroof. What a time to be alive.
After an adorable slow dance, Alice and Tom escape for a quickie, and from Alice’s reaction, it sounds like she’s heavily into it.
Dani confesses that she had a sex dream about Bette Porter (haven’t we all?), while Sophie stays tight-lipped about cheating with Finley. We all know this relationship is about to come crashing down, but who’s to say we can’t enjoy Sophie and Dani as they smash into each other one last time?
As Micah and Maribel are about to screw for the first time, Maribel jokes, “You sure you remember how?” Micah also asks for verbal consent in this scene, which is a huge plus in our books!
After Sophie serenades Finley with a rendition of Tegan and Sara’s “Closer,” the two get back together. Things almost get awkward when Finley mentions that they’re doing it in Dani’s bed, but the two move past it and make sweet passionate love.
Dani and Sophie are back at it again, and when Sophie is unsure whether they should be fucking, Dani asks Sophie to touch her and then the brakes are off. A must-watch in our book.
Perhaps in a callback to pool sex from the original series, Micah and Jose have sex in a pool with “Love Is a Bitch” by Two Feet playing in the background. We’re here for it!
Shane has mad hot sex with Lena on a desk after Lena tells her it’s over between her and Tess. All we’ll say is this scene did not last long enough for us.
With Sophie and Dani leaving for Hawaii the next day to get married, Finley throws a wrench in the plan by seducing Sophie and being her adorable self. The two fuck for the first time but leave us wondering what will happen with Sophie and Dani.
Shane tops Tess, and her moans indicate that Tess is having a seriously good time. But after Tess comes, she starts talking about Finley’s alcoholism, and the mood disappears as quickly as it came.
Jose tells Micah he loves him, and Micah gathers up the courage to try something with Jose he’s never done before. The results are incredible.
Shane’s ex-lover Cherie Jaffe is back in town, and this time she’s dating (and banging) Tess. When Tess tries to leave a party early, Cherie cuts in and goes down on Tess. As messy as this love triangle is, we just can’t look away.
After swiping right, Micah meets a man named Hassan — or rather gets topped by him on a couch — from the front and the back.
After more than 10 years, Shane is back in action — this time with a sexy flight attendant on the table in another scene that just doesn’t last long enough.
Sophie and Finley are back at it again, this time with two butt slaps and a bra thrown onto the ground in haste. Sophie moans while Finley eats her out, and Finley gets some while lying down and sitting up. At the end, Sophie asks, “Should we like drink water or eat or something?” Same, girl.
The opening line is “fuck Bette Porter,” but Gigi and Dani clearly don’t need her. Before the clothes even come off, Gigi sucks Dani’s breast and then moves down her body with precision until Dani takes the reins.
Bette and Pippa fuck inside an art installation with multicolored lights. There’s hand-holding, finger sucking, gasping, and a whole lot of sexual tension that was worth the wait. Where is the Emmy Award for Best Cinematography?
This scene of Gigi going down on Nat is just so damn good, even if we know Alice is going to be pissed at their rendezvous. But with a killer soundtrack and some great shots of Gigi eating out Nat, we just can’t look away.
Fresh off being rejected by Pippa Pascal in a professional and possibly romantic sense, Bette runs to Gigi and fucks her from behind to the soundtrack of Fletcher’s “The One.” Need we say more?
When Shane finally admits to Tess that she wants to be her partner, Tess grabs her and all bets are off. We get a bit of anal and some nipple sucking with the backdrop of lights in Las Vegas behind them, and damn, it’s just beautiful.
The first episode of Generation Q starts with a bang — literally. Dani goes down on Sophie while Sophie is having her period, and we cannot think of a hotter way to start this series.
Gigi asks Bette if she wants this, and Bette responds by pressing Gigi’s hands atop her breasts. Fingers are sucked and the two push each other around before sharing some passionate French kisses and making us gasp with pleasure.
We’ve never seen a threesome as arousing as this, and Billie Eilish’s “ilomilo” certainly elevates the mood. It’s dark and titillating and vaguely forbidden with Alice and Nat fucking Nat’s ex Gigi in the backroom of a bar. We never will stop hitting play on this one.
