The King Says

The King Says

The King Says is a variation of the Japanese Ōsama (王様) game (The King Game), similar to the western Truth or Dare.

The King Says bot supports two ways of playing the game: anonymous dares and randomized numbers.

Anonymous dares

This version works well for both shy and daring players. Players input dares into the game, then the game chooses a random dare and assigns random players to the placeholders.

The game goes like this:

  • All players join the game via the invite link
  • Players start entering dares on their devices
  • Once enough dares are added, one player presses "reveal a dare"
  • After a dare is completed, the next dare can be revealed
  • At any point of the game anyone can add new dares to the list of not revealed dares

For the number of dares, it's suggested to start with twice the number of players. For example, for 6 players, enter at least 12 dares total. Feel free to adjust based on the group’s mood: if players want to add more dares, give them the time, and if on the opposite it's not going well with adding new ones, proceed with the game to help them understand how it works first.

To keep the excutement during the game, try to make sure the number of unrevealed dares does not go too low: ask to add new dares once in a while to not let them get close to zero. Again, adjust based on the group's mood and how long you plan to continue playing.

Don't force players to do what they don't want to do, suggest milder alternatives or completely skip some dares that don't fit, people should feel safe not to ruin the good atmosphere of the evening.

For the same reason, don't try to investigate who added which dare if you play this mode.

Randomized numbers

This version is closer to the original Ōsama game.

The game goes like this:

  • All players join the game via the invie link
  • One player is appointed as the King
  • The King says a dare out loud, for example: "Player #1 kisses player #3"
  • Then, any player presses the /numbers command on their device (or # button in the web interface). All players will receive their numbers and see who #1 and #3 are
  • New King is appointed

Note: You can use the /numbers command to also determine who the next King is.

In the original Japanese version of the game the King themselves can't participate in their dare. You can play this version as well, for that use /numbers command and each round ask who has the number which is equal to the number of participating players (e.g. for 6 players, player #6 is the King). Then the King says the dare (using numbers from 1 to 5 in this example).
