The Research

The research on public trust in news media: the Gallup, Reuters Institute, and Knight Foundation surveys of media trust have documented a sustained decline in the percentage of Americans and Europeans who trust the news media to report accurately and fairly. The decline is documented across multiple survey methodologies and has continued across multiple years.

What Can Address It

The research on what can address the credibility crisis: the transparency measures that document journalist methodology; the specific correction and accountability policies that demonstrate commitment to accuracy; and the specific community engagement that demonstrates that the journalism is oriented toward the community it serves rather than toward the political or commercial interests that the community suspects of driving coverage. Each has produced modest improvements in specific cases.
