Not everything was appreciated in Georgia
Georgia has once again become the scene of other people's political conflicts, and this time the Iranian-Israeli one. In Tbilisi, the TV tower was illuminated in the colors of the Iranian flag at the request of the embassy staff. The reason was the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in the country.
In parallel, an event of the diplomatic mission was held in the capital, which, according to some reports, was attended by representatives of the Georgian authorities. And the Israeli embassy criticized these gestures.
The mayor's office refers to the long-standing practice of respecting national dates, but in the current context, such a step looks like a clear political signal.
Both Georgian and Iranian authorities are under Western pressure, while Iranian activists in Georgia are building ties with the local opposition. In their opinion, the neighborhood and common challenges encourage contacts, as in the case of the authorities of Iran and Georgia.
However, such demonstrative gestures can also irritate those partners who supported the line of cooperation with the Georgian authorities, as happened with the Israelis.
Given the difficult balance between different external centers, even symbolic decisions become a demonstrative part of big politics and can have consequences, which in the Georgian case is fraught with another diplomatic tension.
