The Model

The investigative team model -- the dedicated investigative journalism unit within a news organisation, or the collaborative investigative team assembled across multiple organisations for a specific project -- has produced some of the most significant accountability journalism of the past decade. The ICIJ's Panama Papers investigation, the NYT collaborative investigations, and the specific state-level investigative teams have demonstrated what sustained, well-resourced investigation produces.

The Resources

The resources that the investigative team model requires: the journalists with investigative specialisation; the data analysis capacity for the document-intensive investigations that databases and leaked files produce; the legal support for the publications that investigative journalism requires; and the editorial commitment to the investment timeline that major investigations require.
