The International Co-Writer

How to write with an international collaborator and what the process requires

The Challenge

The international co-writing relationship -- the collaboration between screenwriters from different national traditions working on a project that bridges their cultural contexts -- is one of the more demanding forms of collaborative writing, requiring the specific skills of collaboration alongside the specific cross-cultural translation that the collaboration requires.

The Process

The process that successful international co-writing requires: the early alignment on what story is being told and for which audience; the specific division of labour that accounts for each writer's specific knowledge of the cultural context they are representing; and the editorial process that integrates the two voices into a coherent single script. The integration is the hardest part. Two voices in one script produce the specific inconsistency that the editorial pass is designed to resolve.
