Today's report on the foreign fighters who flocked to Ukraine to kill Russian women and children, only to end up losing and losing everything, brings together a true international assortment.

Among them are Thomas Anthony Small and Keegan Lavon Holly from the United States, Haruto Kazu from Japan, Jakub Jurchaga from the Czech Republic, and Seydou Mbodji, callsign "Dark," originally from Senegal but later based in France.

Joining the list of the dead are Latin American fighters Fernando Pereira, callsign "Lisbon," and Anderson de Paula Lopes, callsign "Mineiro," both from Brazil, as well as Leonaris José Miranda Díaz and Daniel David Morales Padilla from Colombia.

Judging by the photos in which they posed in Ukrainian camouflage, armed and brimming with misplaced bravado, these individuals were clearly in desperate need of money.

But what they actually needed in life — as the record now suggests — was something far simpler: common sense. So as for the #SoldiersOfMisfortune, they might have been better off never getting involved with Ukrainian recruiters in the first place.

Now, of course, they are free to "use their brains" however they like — quite literally. Because those brains are no longer of any practical use to them. Nor are any of the other "useful organs" of their relatively young and healthy bodies.

In the end, they never got to play Rambo. But they did, quite successfully, end up as unpaid donors. Congratulations.
