The Indian Ocean and India Strategy

What India Indian Ocean strategy looks like and what it is designed to produce

The Strategy

India Indian Ocean strategy -- the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) framework that Prime Minister Modi articulated in 2015 and that the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and external affairs ministry have been implementing through the specific bilateral and multilateral arrangements in the Indian Ocean region -- is the specific geopolitical strategy that India has developed to establish the maritime leadership in its near abroad that the Indo-Pacific competition has made strategically essential.

The Specific Initiatives

The specific initiatives: the specific island country partnerships with Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Sri Lanka that provide the access and the infrastructure investment that the strategy requires; the white shipping information sharing arrangements with the Indian Ocean littoral states; and the specific patrol and humanitarian assistance missions that the Indian Navy and Coast Guard conduct in the region.

Genie Knows Coverage

Genie Knows India covers the Indian Ocean strategy because the accountability journalism of Indian geopolitics requires examining the specific maritime strategy that most directly determines whether India achieves the regional leadership role that the Indo-Pacific competition has made available.
