On Mother's Day, let's celebrate the best superhero mom in the business: The Incredibles' Helen Parr, aka Elastigirl.
It's a difficult business being a superhero. There are bad guys firing lasers at you, explosions to avoid and adventures across space and time to deal with. But anyone who is a parent will tell you that being a good parent is as close to being a superhero as anyone can get. Juggling work life and home life, making sure there's always a meal on the table, getting the kids to school on time, taking care of a newborn -- all of that makes anyone with children a super-parent. But then again, there are those who have to juggle both. In fact, such is the case for certain superheroes who not only have to juggle their secret identities with their regular one, they also have to add being a parent on top of that.
There are many exemplary superhero parents out there, such as Reed Richards and Susan Storm, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones and Clark Kent and Lois Lane. But for Mother's Day , let's cast a spotlight on the greatest superhero mom in any medium: The Incredibles' Helen Parr, aka Elastigirl.
Helen Parr is the matriarch of the Parr family, the superhero ensemble at the heart of Disney and Pixar's fan-favorite Incredibles films. As Elastigirl, Helen had a successful career where she shined as a solo superhero at the height of the super-powered vigilante era. After marrying Mr. Incredible, the two would start a family and, following the government's ban on superheroes, the couple would permanently retire. Living as a normal family -- as normal as a family can be when everyone has superpowers -- Helen stayed at home with three exhausting children while Bob headed off to work every day.
It's here that Helen proved how great of a mom she was by juggling taking care of Jack-Jack, Violet and Dash all by herself. What's more, she even had to deal with Bob's absence, after he would start chasing the thrill of the old days by working for Syndrome. Left home alone with the kids, Helen still managed to take care of everything and everyone, from doing the laundry, cleaning and cooking meals to stopping fights between the kids -- something that is no easy feat when one can run at super-speed and the other can turn invisible.
But that's just a part of what makes Helen Parr such an incredible superhero mom. On top of being a great and dedicated mom, she also has superpowers that help her protect her children even more. In both Incredibles and Incredibles 2 , her children are her top priority countless times over. When their jet got destroyed by a missile in the first movie, she leaped to her children, not hesitating for a moment to wrap herself around them to protect them from the blast. She also got thrown right into an explosion by her husband in order to save Jack-Jack, once again without hesitation.
In Incredibles 2 , it was Helen's time to go back outside and start working as a superhero again. As for Bob, it was his turn to stay at home with the kids. And while he also did a great job of taking care of them, he was also exhausted like he never had been before. And yet, when it was Helen who stayed home, she managed to do all of it without breaking much of a sweat. It just further goes to show that there is no business like a superhero business. And there's certainly no harder work than being a mom.
Disney and Pixar's Incredibles and Incredibles 2 were written and directed by Brad Bird. The films are available to stream now on the Disney+ streaming service.
Ian Cardona has written for CBR since 2017. He is a Feature, Comic Breakouts and News writer. He's been in love with comics for a very long time, and believes there is some good to be found even in the industry's more difficult times. His favorite Avenger is Captain America, and that was long before the character starred in a very successful film franchise. He is an avid statue and Funko Pop! figures collector, and he's rapidly running out of shelf space. With CBR, he has been able to write about his favorite subjects, from the MCU to Doctor Who. You can follow him on Twitter at @ian_c1701 (yes, that is a Star Trek reference) for discussions, debates or pictures of really cool collectibles he probably doesn't have room for.

This isn't the adorable cartoon family you're used to!
Disney has had an “incredible” summer, so far. The release of the long-awaited sequel to its blockbuster movie “The Incredibles” finally hit theaters and it took the world by storm . As of July 2, the movie has taken in more than $650 million in international box office sales.
The sequel took 14 long years to hit theaters, leaving fans anxious to see what happened to their favorite characters: Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl, their daughter Violet and sons Dash and Jack-Jack. With “ Incredibles 2 ” doing so well in box office sales, we hope we won’t have to wait so long to see what the future has in store for the Parr family next time!
One fan decided he didn’t want to wait for another movie to see a more grown-up version of “The Incredibles” kids. Australian artist Warrick Wong used his talent and imagination to bring a darker, more mature look to the young superheroes — and their parents as well.
“I was a huge fan of the first ‘Incredibles,’ especially Jack-Jack!” Wong explained to BuzzFeed . “I loved how he had multiple powers which was what led me to think, ‘What would he look like if he grew up and learned to control and harness those powers?'”
So, Wong created the images, and a little alternate-universe backstory for each, and shared them on social media for the world to see. Prepare yourself: these are not the adorable little ones you’re used to seeing!
Grown-up Violet, with her protective shielding powers, really comes out of her shell in the future according to Wong. The artist said he wanted to make her “a super confident badass” like “Terminator” heroine Sarah Connor.

Wong’s vision for the quick-moving and fast-thinking Dash takes him to new limits in the future. The artist sees Dash developing his superpowers to light speed “like The Flash” and being able to time travel!

The youngest Parr child, Jack-Jack, has the most powers of the entire family. So, Wong had a lot of inspiration to work with in creating the mature-version of the boy. Wong decided to highlight three of Jack-Jack’s many powers in his artwork: monster, torch and lasers. A trifecta of terrific powers!

Things haven’t gone so well for the head of the family, Mr. Incredible, according to Wong. After a personal tragedy, Bob turned to a darker side and searched for revenge for his presumed lost family. Wong dubbed his piece “Old Man Incredible.” The beard and tattoo make him look pretty menacing!

The central character of “The Incredibles 2” faced a troubled future in Wong’s imagination. Held captive by an arch-enemy and presumed dead by the world, Helen Parr/Elastigirl is shown in the concept art as storming back and ready for a fight!

And, while he’s not a member of the Parr family, the Incredibles team would not be complete without Frozone, right? So, Wong created a piece of art with this cool guy as the centerpiece. His future is left a little more to the fans’ imaginations, but he looks totally amazing!

Those are pretty sweet! One of the best things about social media is seeing what creative people are able to do with beloved characters . I’d put these right up there with the artist who gave us real-life versions of the Disney princesses .

The Incredibles 2 was finally released last weekend to overwhelmingly positive reviews (you can read ours here ), as well as a $180 million box office draw — the all-time biggest opening for an animated film. In the sequel, the Parr family matriarch Elastigirl (voiced by Holly Hunter) takes the center stage in a public relations campaign to improve society’s perception of superheroes, while Mr. Incredible himself is mostly relegated to being a stay-at-home dad (and attempting to control the couple’s infant son Jack-Jack’s budding superpowers).

Hi-jinks ensue, etc., etc., and Elastigirl manages to once again beat the baddie with her family’s help. You could say the film promotes female empowerment, as we’re seeing with so many franchises these days — from Star Wars to comic book movies to television series — but that’s not the, uh, takeaway many people left the theater with.

— Jorge Iglesias (@lgigrj) June 17, 2018
New Yorker film critic Anthony Lane took things a step further however, with a sexually charged review of an animated movie for children, thanks in part to the following eyebrow-raising excerpt:
Which bring us to the other event. Take your seat at any early-evening screening of “Incredibles 2” in the coming days, listen carefully, and you may just hear a shifty sound, as of parents squirming awkwardly beside their enraptured offspring. And why, kids? Because Mommy just leaned over to Daddy and whispered, “Is it just me, or does Mrs. Incredib
