[ Elle ] Jennifer Lawrence shared some of the “degrading and humiliating” experiences she has had in Hollywood.
After acknowledging that hearing about the sexual harassment allegations against Harvey Weinstein had been “harrowing,” Lawrence recounted a story about the producers of an unnamed film , who asked her to lose weight.
“One girl before me had already been fired for not losing enough weight fast enough,” the actress said. “And, during this time, a female producer had me do a nude lineup with about five women who were much, much thinner than me. And we all stood side-by-side with only paste-ons covering our privates. After that degrading and humiliating lineup, the female producer told me I should use the naked photos of myself as inspiration for my diet.”
Lawrence is known for speaking her mind, yet she says that didn’t make a difference on this specific occasion. “I asked to speak to a producer about the unrealistic diet regime and he responded by telling me he didn’t know why everyone thought I was so fat, he thought I was perfectly ‘f*ckable.’
The actress recalled that she felt “trapped” due to her relative lack of power: “I couldn’t have gotten a producer or a director or a studio head fired. I let myself be treated a certain way because I felt like I had to for my career. I was young and walking that fine line of sticking up for myself without being called difficult, which they did call me, but I believe the word they used was “nightmare.”
“I didn’t want to be a whistleblower. I didn’t want these embarrassing stories talked about in a magazine. I just wanted a career,” Lawrence said. But after she was cast in the Hunger Games films, things changed—because she had become “a movie star,” who had “the power to say no.” “I worked out every day because Katniss is strong, but I would be damned if I was going to represent the ideal that someone who looks skeletal is a positive body image. I was not going to have young girls skipping dinner because they wanted to look like Katniss.”

I’d have to bite my tongue keep my temper in check if I wanted the role and a future in Hollywood. I’d chalk it up to a learning experience. I’m not exactly a snowflake and wouldn’t melt over these humiliating experiences, nor would I forget the slights. The entertainment industry is a tough market and you’ll constantly be judged on your looks. Be prepared to deal.
My cousin was a model – good enough to make her living at it for a few years. She said comments like this were common. You just learn to grow a tough skin. You are judged on your looks. People aren’t always kind; it can be seriously cutthroat. The ones who have made it feel entitled to pile on the ones who are scrambling at the bottom. It’s kind of like the seniors picking on the incoming freshmen to show their power.
I feel like she made this story up, and there is no answer. I don’t doubt she has been harrassed in her career. But this story seems like a press release. I give it no stars.

She had relatively little power, and does not have access to the schedules of the predators in the industry. This is like blaming the victim and excusing the behavior of the perps in your haste to blame Jennifer for the slimy actions of the scum of Hollyweird. Tell me you would risk losing your career and wealth to expose those in power, and I will take you seriously.

This is interesting, considering I met Jennifer at an Xmen movie premiere a few years ago and she was seriously bone thin.
“I was not going to have young girls skipping dinner because they wanted to look like Katniss.” How does this even make sense? Katniss was very thin and in great shape, most people would strive to look like that easily leading them to skip meals and over-workout.

Jennifer Lawrence is one of the biggest stars in the world, but some things still embarrass her.
The Hunger Games actress shared her humiliation after having to sing along to Wu-Tang Clan's 'Ain't Nuthing ta F' Wit' in the opening scenes of upcoming Netflix film Don't Look Up .
"It took a while [to learn it], it took a couple of weeks," she said at the global press conference. "And then, because something happened with COVID, that ended up being my very first scene working on the movie.
"It was terrifying because I'm in this huge hangar and it's so quiet. I don't know anybody and I had to rap Wu-Tang Clan. It was just horrendous, and then what's in the movie is, like, five seconds.
"I really wish I had known that. If I could have foreseen what you would have used... It was the worst day of my life. It was very embarrassing [but] I knew my assignment. I did know every word, I still do."
The actress, who is currently expecting her first child , recently took a break from doing films after a number of back to back high profile roles.
"I was not pumping out the quality that I should have," she said. "I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I'd gotten sick of me.
"It had just gotten to a point where I couldn't do anything right. If I walked a red carpet, it was, 'Why didn't she run?'… I think that I was people-pleasing for the majority of my life."
Don't Look Up focuses on a wannabe astronomer (Lawrence) studying under mentor Dr Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) as they discover that a deadly comet is hurtling towards Earth.
The star-studded line-up also features Meryl Streep, Ariana Grande, Matthew Perry, Ron Perlman, Scott Mescudi, Mark Rylance, Tyler Perry, Jonah Hill, Timothée Chalamet and Cate Blanchett.
Don't Look Up is released in select cinemas on December 10 and on Netflix from December 24.
