[Independent Media Report] Under the second wave of epidemic of Wuhan Coronavirus, professions warned that the Hong Kong medical system may collapse in a week’s time.  Spokesman of the Citizens’ Press Conference worries the government will introduce Martial Law to suppress the anti-tyranny movement, by virtue of the justification for fighting virus, and in fact it is a good pretext to be used.  Doctor Alfred WONG Yam Hong, physician of Tuen Mun Hospital and member of Médecins Inspirés, appeals Hong Kong people to minimize staying outdoor and uphold personal hygiene to avoid intensifying the epidemic.  “Tyranny and virus have never relaxed, not even a single moment”, said Doctor WONG.

Senior doctor suggested Martial Law, Citizens’ Press Conference worries it will be used as pretext to suppress the anti-tyranny movement

Doctor HO Pak Leung, Director of the Infection Centre of the Hong Kong University, has recently suggested introducing Martial Law to fight the epidemic, including banning any assembly over 3 or 4 people.  The Citizens’ Press Conference responded that it worried the government would make use of this (Martial Law)to further restrict the freedom of assembly.  WONG agreed and added, “the democracy and freedom of speech have been deprived by the government and are no longer exist in Hong Kong; Hong Kong people need to do their best to fight against the epidemic to avoid community outbreak, otherwise the government will make use of this to impose the Martial Law – this will definitely be an endless trouble.”  WONG is fully confident in Hong Kong people, “all my hopes are on Hong Kong people, but not any on the government.”

Medical system is overloading, shortage of equipment, medical personnel using equipment economically

WONG emphasized that everything in hospitals is under-supplied.  The medical system is overloading and will be collapsed shortly.  If community outbreak happens, it can lead to the worst situation.  “All my colleagues in hospitals can only use 1 mask everyday “economically”, but everyone working in hospitals should change with a new mask once taking it off.”  Although colleagues are stressful and worrying, WONG observed they are keeping good morale to continuously safeguard Hong Kong from the virus in their own position.  WONG ran out all his expectation on the government, however, he still hoped to see the Hospital Authority to enhance communications with the frontline medical personnel and transparency of the stock of equipment, “a peace of mind to the frontline, they are entitled.”

Joseph LEE Kok Long, Legislator representing the Health Services functional constituency cum Chairman of Association of Hong Kong Nursing Staff, also pointed out that the frontline medical staff was facing various difficulties in their daily works – reusing N95 masks, using under-qualified protective gowns, dealing with suspected Wuhan Virus infected cases in general ward etc.  Moreover, LEE criticized the Hospital Authority has continuously altered the standard of using protective equipment(making more criteria to be met to trigger the use of protective equipment) for 8 times.  This caused anxiety among frontline colleaguesas they worried if this latest standard was still up to the international standard.

Hong Kong people should stay home to fight against tyranny – supporting the “yellow” shops via take-away and online orders

The Citizens’ Press Conference stated that the number of confirmed cases in Hong Kong was accelerating.  Under the current trend, the number of confirmed cases would hit 1,000 in 5 days, substantially overloading the negative pressure wards.  The spokesman called on Hong Kong people to The Citizens’ Press Conference stated that the number of confirmed cases in Hong Kong is accelerating.  Under the current trend, the number of confirmed cases will hit 1,000 in 5 days, substantially overloading the negative pressure wards.  The spokesman called on Hong Kong people to treasure the contributions done by the medical staff, and to safeguard themselves from the epidemic so as to avoid facing the dangerous situation as in SARS again.
