Jake Gyllenhaal revealed that it was “torture” filming sex scenes while playing Jennifer Aniston ’s love interest in the 2002 movie The Good Girl — but only kind of.
During an interview on the Tuesday, October 5, episode of The Howard Stern Show , The Guilty star , 40, admitted that he had a big crush on Aniston, 52, at the time of making the film, which made things rather uncomfortable for him.
“Oh yeah, it was torture,” Gyllenhaal — who was only 21 while working on the project — told host Howard Stern with a straight face. “But it was not torture. Come on, it was a mix of both.”
The Donnie Darko actor admitted that love scenes are “awkward” on any set “because there are maybe 30, 50 people watching it, maybe, If it’s a closed set, it’s less. That doesn’t turn me on.”
Gyllenhaal explained that filming intimate scenes can feel “oddly mechanical,” adding, “It’s a dance, you’re choreographing for a camera. You can get in it but it’s like a fight scene. You have to choreograph those scenes.”
In the indie film, directed by Miguel Arteta and written by White Lotus creator Mike White , Gyllenhaal plays Holden, a shy cashier who begins a relationship with his older coworker Justine (Aniston), who is struggling with her depression and an emotionally unavailable husband.
The characters share an unlikely emotional bond in the film, which quickly turns sexual. The Inside Amy Schumer alum said that there are techniques actors use to make sure things stay professional on set. When shooting The Good Girl , Gyllenhaal admitted that “the pillow technique was used,” joking, “That was just preemptive and used generally always when actually in a horizontal place in that movie.”
The Oscar nominee explained that the pillow “was actually a Jennifer suggestion,” before clarifying that it was actually more of a request than a suggestion. “She was very kind to suggest it before we began,” he teased. “She was like, ‘I’m putting a pillow here.’ That was it, that was all she said.”
In the past, Gyllenhaal has joked that working with The Morning Show star was a little rough — but only because he “had a crush on her for years,” he told Entertainment Weekly in 2016. “That’s all I’m going to say,” he continued at the time. “It was lovely. It wasn’t hard, that’s what I would say.”
What wasn’t difficult for the California native was talking about his girlfriend of three years, Jeanne Cadieu . On Tuesday, he told Stern, 67, that the model, 25, is “such a good person.” While he wouldn’t discuss whether he has plans to propose anytime soon, he did note, “All I want is to be a good husband and a father. … That really is what I want.”

Take the awkwardness of shooting a sex scene, combine it with the anxiety of meeting a longtime crush, and you'll have a pretty good idea of the predicament Jake Gyllenhaal found himself in when he made the 2002 film The Good Girl with Jennifer Aniston .
During a recent appearance on Howard Stern 's Sirius XM show, the actor looked back on the ups and downs of filming intimate scenes with Aniston — "It was torture… but it was also not torture," he said — and revealed a "technique" they employed to keep things copacetic.
"I do remember a pillow," Gyllenhaal said. "Yeah, the pillow technique was used. That was just preemptive, and used — generally, always — when actually in a horizontal place in that movie. Everything else is whatever it was. I remember those two characters did a lot of making out on like, boxes in the back room." ( The Good Girl starred Aniston and Gyllenhaal as two disaffected retail workers who cross paths in a small Texas town.)
Stern then asked Gyllenhaal, who can currently be seen in The Guilty , if "the pillow technique" was "a Lee Strasberg kind of move," referring to the famed drama teacher who popularized method acting.
"I think that was actually a Jennifer suggestion," Gyllenhaal said. "I think she was actually very kind to suggest it before we began… She was like, 'I'm putting a pillow here.' That was it, that was all she said."
Before the pillow talk came up, Stern asked Gyllenhaal about having a crush on Aniston back in the day, and if he gave the Friends star a heads-up prior to shooting by saying something like, "'If you're feeling something, protrusion or whatever, I can't control this."
Gyllenhaal laughed off Stern's word choice — "protrusion" — and explained that love scenes are rather technical.
"Weirdly, love scenes are awkward because there are maybe 30, 50 people watching it," he said. "Maybe if you have a closed set, it's less. That doesn't turn me on. Most of the time, it's oddly mechanical, right?"
"You're a professional," Stern offered.
"Yes, and also it's a dance," Gyllenhaal said. "You're choreographing for a camera… It's one of those things — it's like a fight scene, you've got to choreograph those things, and I always have tried."

Only Good Girls could make you root for a murderous counterfeiter and a crime-loving suburban mom to end up together. Though Rio and Beth’s relationship on the show is undeniably toxic, the two also have some of the best sexual tension on TV. At first, their flirtationship started as just that: seductive glances, double entendres. But in Season 2, they finally made things physical and hooked up in a dirty bar bathroom — while Beth’s husband Dean was sitting just outside. It was the definition of forbidden (and very, very hot).
After Beth almost killed Rio in the Season 2 finale, things rightfully cooled off for a bit. Now, Season 4 has brought the two back together again. Beth is back with Dean, tried to get a hit man to take Rio out, and teamed up with the FBI to get him arrested. But despite knowing that Beth is a huge liability to his business and freedom, Rio can’t seem to keep himself from working with her. Round and round they go. “There’s a real cat-and-mouse thing going on,” series star Christina Hendricks, who plays Beth , told Collider in 2019.

After pulling a job for Rio and seeing how big his operation is, Beth becomes intrigued. She calls Rio over to her house — presumably to ask to join. This is also the episode where Beth first stands up to Rio, telling him that since she completed his job, she wants his men to leave her and her house alone. Rio looks impressed that she has the courage.
The FBI is suspicious abut Beth being seen around Rio, and they want answers. Rio’s solution? Tell the FBI that they’re hooking up. “Tell them we're making love,” he says. “Make me sound good though, yeah?” I am unwell.
Beth tries to get Rio to sell face injectables, because it’s all she can get her hands on. He’s not convinced, and upon leaving their meeting, he tells Beth not to use the products on herself. “You don’t need it,” he says in his seductive voice.
After a season and a half of tension, Beth and Rio finally have sex — in a restaurant bathroom. It’s everything they’ve both wanted for a long time. This is a great #Brio episode not just because of the anticipation, but because it’s when Rio first starts to really trust Beth as a potential partner. He even says he’s giving her “the keys to the kingdom.” “I think you could be something,” he adds.
Beth insists that she and Rio go in 50-50 on their new venture, and he agrees. “You look good behind that desk,” he tells her, as they stand in her new office. “You’d look so much better on top of it.”
How she didn’t jump him right then, I don’t know.
Determined to get out of the crime business, Beth decides to go out on one last robbery. And before she gets out of the game for good, she and Rio have sex again.
