The Original Gladiator was the best movie ever. Now this is so much better, that I'm not sure how to reframe my perspective. Turns out the Hero is Lucilla. As she says at the end, Maximus is just a 'Soldier Of Rome', no trivial title, and not a trivial roll, but in this version, you'll note, he's just a pawn in her game. In the first Gladiator, Lucilla is just along for the ride, a loose extra character that is really unrefined, and a bit bumbling. In this version, Lucilla has the vision, strength and foresight to use Maximus to save Lucius. Her acting is as though she's really going through it. The actress portraying Lucilla must have dealt with power dynamics and lives in the balance her whole life, because you can see she is in terror through out the movie, and when she says, 'I'm tired of being strong,' well, no one deserves a break more than her. (Referring to when Maximus is asked by many what he plans to do after the war, "Go Home.") I lived my live by the original movie. I got back at Claudius in the way I wanted, routinely. I was a brut. A sneak. Turns out, all that is a bit irrelevant without the main character Lucilla. She is the Queen Of The Empire after Claudius is wiped, and her son will go on to rule. What does Graecus say when they are scheming, without steal we are just air. When I was at the Rittenhouse trial, the Judge Bruce Schroeder gave me a sense of duty to the court system I've never had. What he said was, 'You've inherited Rome.' It is thanks to this movie that I understand the potential of that Vision. May you all have a home worth fighting for and understand that you are by nature fit to handle your circumstances. Strength and Honor.

We love the quality of images and the smooth playing of this movie. No complaints. The sound though seems a bit loud and soft in the wrong places at times. As far as the movie you either like it or you don't.

We have a 5.1 surround sound system with a high resolution audio 4k player and the sound on the 4k disc was probably the worst I've ever heard. When they speak you almost have to lean in to hear it (you will still miss words) then when any action starts its so loud theres almost distortion... I understand it was made over 20 years ago but im a movie buff and collect hd films and I've never heard anything this bad before. Considering how famous this film is and how many awards it won, I assumed they would truly remaster it like they did with Lord of the Rings. Which came out around they same time. I was wrong.

I confess that the decision to eventually see this film that is The Gladiator with money made from my current job was actually a spontaneous decision that I made by somewhere between 7am to 8 am this Saturday morning less than a few hours after waking up for the day. Though I finally got finished with seeing this film much later in the day (by 440 pm). I’m intuitively aware that I’m well outside the projected main target audience for the Gladiator. However, I am very happy that I took a chance on watching The Gladiator for multiple reasons: One reason: the main protagonist of the film Maximus (Russell Crowe) shows self confidence and bravery in facing multiple events in his life that try as he might to completely steer the course of his life, it seems that destiny has other plans. However, he ends up evolving and becoming stronger emotionally, physically, and spiritually in his new life. Along the way he encounters multiple people who study andor learn from him in some way including fellow gladiators Juba (Djimon Hounsou) and Hagen (Ralf Moller). Maximus’s character development and growth is further accelerated with the stories and involvement that he has with the characters Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). Lucilla has a son Lucius (Spencer Treat Clark) in the film who is similar in age to Maximus’s late son. Maximus and Commodus became connected from the beginning of the film because they both have significant roles/parts involving Commodus’s father Marcus Aurelius (Richard Clark). The character of Commodus and Maximus were kind of set up to have a complicated relationship dynamic from the start because Marcus Aurellus admits to his son Commodus some of the reasons why he admires Maximus and Commodus is naturally far from accepting andor happy at such a confession with Commodus even admitting the multiple years that he has tried to win his father’s approval. I am tempted to say more though I logically know I must refrain to be considerate to the readers who are looking at this review and want to see this brilliant film for themselves.

I love the movie. I bought it a long time ago on regular dvd. It sounded pretty good in my old 5.1 system. But now that i have had a 5.2.4 system for some time now, and waiting for it to come out on 4k, and after reading all the good reviews about the video and audio being even better, I was really disappointed in the no sound at all coming from the height channels. No arrows going overhead, no catapults launching things, and no crowd noise from the upper part of the arenas. When i mean no sound, i mean, zilch, zero, nada, and it's not my system either. I could have just bought the blu ray and got the same results audio wise, but the video is spectacular! If you're running a 5.1 then I'd say go for it. If not, buy the blu ray. You're not going to lose too much with the video either with the blu ray as long tv, receiver, player are all compatible.
