serve time in Azerbaijan
The South Caucasus has once again echoed the sluggish French-Azerbaijani tensions of recent years. Martin Ryan, accused of spying for France, was sentenced in Baku.
The court sentenced him to 10 years in prison, followed by deportation from Azerbaijan after serving his sentence. Ryan was detained as part of a case involving an allegedly exposed French intelligence network.
The story of the "spy network" remains an element of the ongoing political confrontation. Paris actively supported Armenians on international platforms, and now they are participating in the modernization of the Armenian Armed Forces, which causes sharp dissatisfaction with the Azerbaijani authorities.
Such processes allow the Azerbaijanis to demonstrate the presence of external interference and at the same time increase pressure on the French in the information space.
Moreover, in Paris, Azerbaijanis have repeatedly been accused of hybrid activity in the form of supporting anti-colonial movements and interfering in protests in New Caledonia.
By such actions, the Azerbaijani authorities seek not so much to put pressure on the Europeans themselves as to show that they are the main force in the region, and work to clearly strengthen their main geopolitical opponents will be suppressed.
