Flash Gordon is an American football hero who is skyjacked aboard Dr. Hans Zarkov's rocketship along with his beautiful girlfriend Dale Arden. The threesome are drawn into the influence of the planet Mongo, ruled by Emperor Ming the Merciless. The evil Ming has been testing Earth with unnatural disasters, and deeming our world a threat to his rule. He also intends to take Dale as his concubine, attempts to execute Flash and intends to destroy Earth. Flash must avoid the amorous attentions of Ming's daughter, and unite the warring kingdoms of Mongo to rescue Dale and save our world.
Flash Gordon is an American football player who along with Dale Arden are returning to New York City after a long vacation, until the plane they are passengers on crashes into the laboratory of Russian scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov. Both Flash and Dale become unwilling passengers on-board Zarkov's rocketship as Zarkov sets a course for the planet Mongo. Arriving on Mongo, Flash and his companions find the planet is under the rulership of the evil Emperor Ming the Merciless and Ming is attacking Earth with natural disasters as he bids to destroy Earth. Realizing that Earth and the human race is in mortal danger, Flash decides to unite the kingdoms of Mongo and combine the forces of rivals Prince Barin and Prince Vultan to rescue Dale, who is to become Ming's wife and defeat Ming and save Earth from annihilation.
I&#39;ve been having a tough couple of day and revisiting Flash Gordon, a favorite from my childhood, seemed like a good idea. After only five minutes, I was right back into it - as though I was five years old again.<br/><br/>DiLaurentis&#39; Flash is a nonstop blast, filled with tons of hokey effects, goofy dialog, and classic fantasy action. The performances are all over-the-top, but work perfectly, given the subject matter. Von Sydow hams it up as Ming, but keeps the tension strong. It was just as wonderful as it was all those years ago. I can&#39;t wait for the DVD edition to hit this Summer. I&#39;m dying to hear Queen belt out the title song in surround sound.
Typical of an early eighties movie, this film is a classic feel-good fantasy movie. Flash Gordon is a physically fit and handsome man with absolutely no military experience, yet somehow proficient with all kinds of both human and alien weaponry AND is insanely hard to kill. He is the hero of this movie and is a footballer who finds himself the unwilling captor of Dr. Zarkov. Earth has fallen foul to some rather unusual atmospheric anomalies, which is actually the work or Ming the Merciless, ruler of Planet Mongo, who is testing Earth to see if it may compromise his rule. He comes to the conclusion that it will, and plans to destroy it. No one on earth is aware of what lies ahead, and are becoming increasingly scared due to the fact that the eccentric scientist Dr. Zarkov, formally of NASA, is the only one who has provided any explanation, and naturally, everybody thinks he is mad, because he talks of aliens and warring planets. So he travels to Mongo on his experimental rocket, and Flash and Dale Arden (the heroine of the movie) end up on board due to an unfortunate chain of events. The people on earth are unaware that their hero, a human named Flash armed only with a human&#39;s courage and his unique ability to dodge death, is fighting valiantly for their survival, while single-handedly negotiating a peace treaty between the warring factions of Mongo, as well as searching for his captured love Dale.<br/><br/>It really is such a feel good film, with a great theme tune from Queen, in which you really do wish you were there fighting along side him as he courageously fights for the very survival of the human race. Naturally it isn&#39;t long before his name has spread throughout the planet of Mongo, and his enemies tremble at the very mention of his name, as they have never met a creature who is so courageous as the inhabitants of earth are (laugh, but in this film it is true).<br/><br/>This film is definitely worth watching at least once for the fact that it is so fun, if nothing else. The acting isn&#39;t bad, nor are the special effects by any stretch. Watch this film and you won&#39;t regret it.
The narrative is a little plodding, but adult punters will soon slip back into reverie for the lost visions of Saturday morning cinema, and their kids can get off on the extraordinary undercurrent of febrile sexuality. Acting honours go to von Sydow as Ming the Merciless and Mariangela Melato as his dark-eyed henchperson.
