They walked on an Orkney Ferries ferry that arrived late in the day at the Houton dock. I never quite understood how it happened, but they couldn't or didn't take a bus or taxi to Kirkwall. So they walked the whole 10 miles in the rain. According to Google Maps, that's 18 minutes by car, 59 minutes by bus and about 3.5 hours on foot.
Living on Shetland for many years means I experienced several rough crossings on the Aberdeen ferry. One I was not on, but a friend was in the early 1980s, comes to mind. The ferry left Aberdeen on time at 1800 for the normal 14 hour trip.

I'd say it takes quite a lot to be cancelled. We were on a ferry to Shetland a few years ago and were told it was the roughest summer ferry crossing ever! It was horrendous. The noise when we were trying to sleep! It felt like the ferry was vertical and then came crashing down. Not trying to put you off or anything.
Which reminds me of a decidedly rough crossing from Kilchoan to Tobermory in the mid 70s on what looked like a repurposed landing craft. Not leaky though! The minibus west from Ft William via Corran Ferry in pouring rain was bad enough, and we were worried about making the ferry connection.
Quite a rough crossing and although I was not seasick found it hard to sleep due to worry about how the love of my life was feeling. I was concerned as she'd never been shaken around so much before, even standing still was a problem, I thought at one point she might slide and end up tight against some truckers, big brutish looking they were !
I've read reviews about Condor ferries that mention rough seas and lots of people getting sick, but I can't tell if that's more limited to the longer journeys from the UK mainland. Does anyone know if the ride between Jersey and Guernsey is typically rough and choppy? Any recommendations? Thanks!
