The Federalist Papers and Their Limits

I have been reading the Federalist Papers this week -- specifically the numbers dealing with the separation of powers that Madison, Hamilton, and Jay produced to argue for ratification of the Constitution. The argument is brilliant and the argument has specific limits that the subsequent 235 years of constitutional practice have made visible. The column notes both because the honest engagement with founding documents requires noting what the founding argument got right and what it did not anticipate.
