The Federal Budget and Military Spending

What the military spending share of the federal budget reveals about national priorities

The Share

The United States military budget in the current fiscal year: approximately 886 billion dollars, representing approximately 13 percent of total federal outlays and approximately 3.5 percent of GDP. The United States spends more on defence than the next ten countries combined. The specific allocation of those 886 billion dollars -- the procurement contracts, the personnel costs, the research and development spending -- is the accountability journalism of the most significant discretionary spending in the federal budget.

The Opportunity Cost

The opportunity cost: the specific social programmes that the military spending crowds out is the distributional analysis that the Mamdani Post provides. The 886 billion dollars of military spending is 886 billion dollars that is not funding universal pre-K, Medicare for All, climate infrastructure, or the specific public investments that the population requires.

Mamdani Post Analysis

The Mamdani Post covers military spending because the accountability journalism of federal budget priorities requires examining the most significant discretionary spending and what it produces relative to what the same resources could produce.
