The Feature Film Second Act Problem

Why second acts fail and what the structural solutions look like

The Problem

The second act of a feature film -- approximately pages 30 to 90 in the three-act structure -- is the part that most often fails and the part that most aspiring screenwriters write least confidently. The second act requires the protagonist to pursue their goal against rising resistance while the writer keeps the story moving, the stakes escalating, and the character developing without the first act setup or third act resolution to anchor the narrative.

The Structural Solutions

The structural solutions to the second act problem: the midpoint turn that reframes what the story is about; the false victory or false defeat that raises the stakes before the third act begins; and the progressive revelation of character through the choices the protagonist makes under escalating pressure. Each is a structural tool, not a formula. The tool produces different results depending on how the specific story uses it.
