He says it comes from a site that has been continuously tracking and uploading everything. And he means everything.
He sent me the link with the download but I am not sure if I am allowed to put it here or not.
I can't speak for any individual file, but I can give your friend some general advice about suspect files. One effective way to check the safety of files is to open them using a virtual machine. A virtual machine (or VM) is basically an emulation of a computer that your computer executes. There are many tutorials online to help you set up a VM for whatever platform your friend happens to be running.
Your friend can keep a "sandbox" VM in which they open/examine suspect files. Download and open the file in the VM, run a virus and malware scan in the VM and use basic functionality like the web browser to make sure everything works as expected. If that checks out, then the file is probably safe to open/use.
If it's not? Just delete that VM and create a new one. No harm done.
This technique is not foolproof, but it will help you avoid a lot of infections caused by sketchy files.
Now whether your friend should be looking at said photos at all is a different matter, but one that needs to be left to your friends' individual conscience.
My friend says he is more concerned with the torrent being watched and getting into legal trouble. He has less concern with viruses and malware, although he probably should be worried about that as well.
Downloading the torrent through a trusted VPN will hide your IP address.
