Because justice has finally been served — but is it enough?
The guy who hacked the iCloud accounts of over 100 celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and Kim Kardashian has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Ryan Collins is a 36-year-old dad of two from Pennsylvania. He also sparked probably the biggest and far-reaching celebrity scandal in history between 2012 and 2014 — and now he's going to prison.
U.S. District Judge William W. Caldwell slapped Collins with 18 months in federal prison for using an elaborate phishing scheme to convince over 100 celebs to give over their iCloud and Gmail log-in info, leading to the scandal known as
The Fappening," reports The Hollywood Reporter . However, Collins wasn't charged with disseminating the pics to 4Chan, where many people first saw the nude pics.
“The prison sentence received by Mr. Collins is proof that hacking into the accounts of others and stealing private information or images is a crime with serious consequences," said Deirdre Fike, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office, according to Fortune .
The court said there were more than 600 victims of the hack, primarily female celebrities, but didn't list their names.
Collins isn't the only one who'll sit behind bars for perpetrating the hack known as the Fappening or CelebGate. Edward Majerczyk, a 28-year-old from Illinois, was already charged back in March for his participation in a phishing scam that duped celebs to give out their iCloud and Gmail passwords.
The Fappening was back in the news recently after Ken Bone was discovered to have posted on Reddit that he'd seen the celebrity nude pics. "I saw [Jennifer Lawrence's] butt hole," he said. "I liked it."
Condemning the leaks in a 3000-word interview about the leaks said the Fappening is "not a scandal, it's a sex crime," adding that "it's a sexual violation. It's disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change."
Will things change? Doubtful. If something comes out like this again, millions of people will probably click — but maybe, just maybe, some won't.
Will this prosecution deter future hackers?
This seems like way too short of a prison sentence for all the grief this guy caused.
Collins originally faced 5 years in jail, but his guilty plea deal recommended 18 months.
