Fairy Tail's Erza is a fan-favorite character - but how much do you really know about Titania, Queen of the Fairies?
Despite how much everyone in Fairy Tail talks about being family, they’re also the rowdiest bunch of mages in all of Magnolia. Families can get pretty wild, after all. But while the group is known for their raucous behavior and constant friendly sparring, there’s one member of the guild that can make everyone behave: Erza Scarlet, or as she’s often called, Titania, the Queen of Fairies.
Considered one of the most powerful members of the guild, Erza is responsible for some of the best and most over the top fight scenes in the series. Behind Natsu and Lucy, she’s one of the biggest characters on the show, but how much do Fairy Tail fans really know about her? Warning, spoilers are in effect for people who haven't finished the series yet.
Much like every member of Fairy Tail, Erza is extremely protective of the guild and its name. In an omake chapter entitled “She’s Erza” (adapted in episode 203), she ran across Moulin Rouge, a young woman using the name of the guild to threaten a small town, robbing them of their money. Though Erza would find out Moulin was doing it just to survive, as she was an immigrant from another country and couldn’t find work, the young woman received no mercy. Erza promptly beat her to a pulp for impersonating a member of her family. Pretty harsh, but after the beating she invited Moulin Rogue to come work for them if she wanted later, anyway.
Erza starts out as a baby that appeared on the doorstep of a church in Rosemary Village, and the story doesn’t delve any deeper until the final arcs. During the Alvarez Empire arc, we learn Erza’s mother is actually Irene Belserion, a woman who was the Queen of Dragons four hundred years ago. Irene helped create Dragon Slayer magic to fight against invading dragons from another country, but it gradually changed her into a dragon as well, which lost her the love of her husband. After four hundred years of wanting to transform back but failing, she finally chose to have Erza and give her away rather than have her deal with the enmity she had for the humanity her daughter had that Irene had lost.
Despite Erza’s serious personality in combat or in business, she’s not a dour person by any means. Another omake chapter focusing on her showed Erza being tricked into buying an odd-looking superhero outfit from a clothing store. Told that the costume was worn by a woman who defeated evil, she immediately took to the outfit and explored the city as Fairy Woman. The rest of the chapter sees her doing good deeds and helping people, but eventually the costume changes her appearance to look more like a Western-styled character. The end of the chapter sees her return to the clothing store to punish the man for giving her a cursed outfit... but she still maintains the different look afterwards.
Typically, a lot of leading anime heroines tend to be very pure. It matches the audience they’re usually aiming at, young boys and girls who might not have had their first crush and certainly aren’t experienced with love even if they have.
So the lead characters usually have little experience with love as well, even though they’re older. But Erza’s a completely different case. During the “Welcome to Fairy Hills” story, Lucy gets to tour the girls’ dormitory for Fairy Tail. While there, she learns from Levy that Erza has a penchant for the more racy kind of romance novel.
One of the things that helps to make Erza feel like a more three-dimensional character is that she isn’t just one thing. She isn’t just a talented fighter who takes her job super seriously. She isn’t just the primary leader of the current generation of Fairy Tail. She’s also kind of a goof who loves sweets. She wants to be taken seriously both on the battlefield and as a woman. Over the course of the series, we see Erza often curious about the latest fashion trends, and while she’s often off-base (and has a strange love of bunny outfits), it still makes her endearing as a character that she’s trying.
During the omake “Welcome to Fairy Hills”, Lucy visits the dormitory of all the women of Fairy Tail. It’s a joke chapter with a sweet ending, but it has a secondary purpose of allowing the fans to get a look at all the rooms of the women in the guild, from Biska to Juvia, Erza to Levy. But what we learn about Erza is that she actually has way more armor than we actually see her use. There’s a limit to the amount of armor and weapons she can store in magic space, and so she keeps the remainder in Fairy Hills, renting out five rooms just to have enough space for them all.
If Erza can be summed up, it would be as a person who loves life and wants to live as much of it as she can as excellent as she can. She wants the best friends and that’s why she joins Fairy Tail. She works hard and fights the strongest monsters to show off her abilities. And she loves food. During the off-hours for the guild members she’s always going somewhere or coming back with a delicious food item, usually a dessert. Even the giant suitcases she brings with her don’t contain armor, they contain different food and ingredients to cook with.
During the comedy storyline “Fairy Christmas”, we learn that one thing Erza can’t do very well is hold her liquor. During a Christmas party for the guild, everyone involves gets more than a little tipsy on “holiday cheer”, but before Natsu and Gray can exit they’re both pulled into the arms of their romantic interests, Lucy and Juvia.
Jealous at all the romantic couples, Erza snaps and pulls the group into playing the Guild Master Game, where the “guild master” gets to make anyone involved do whatever they want. Erza’s pretty harsh with this game, subjecting the other members (and fans!) to some pretty hilarious and embarrassing sights, making the OVA or manga omake chapter a must-see for any Fairy Tail fan.
Erza has a fairly established look now, even though she’s best known for constantly altering her appearance through the use of multiple different kinds of armors. However, originally Hiro Mashima envisioned a completely different appearance for her. She was going to have a spear instead of a sword, and have a much more natural, “wild”, almost amazonian appearance. He was aiming for someone who could scare Natsu with just a look, and while he succeeded, it was with the armor-clad woman we know today rather than some kind of ersatz anime Wonder Woman.
Hiro Mashima had plans to go for a major twist in the series early on. During the Tower of Heaven arc, we see Erza start to have dreams of her past life as a slave working on the Tower. But these flashbacks were initially planned to be the present for the series rather than the past. In other words, Erza would have still been a young girl slaving away in the tower, and all her memories of Natsu, Gray, and the others would have only been a dream of what life outside the Tower could be. This would have been a massive shift that essentially positioned her as the main character, but fortunately, Mashima changed his mind and decided against invalidating all the fans’ experiences with the guild.

"I guess... A person isn't supposed to die for one's friends... One has to live for one's friends!!! Because that is the path that leads to a happy future..."
24-Hour Armor : Ever since she joined the guild. She describes it as a way to lock up her emotional troubles so she can act strong. Even after the source of most of the said troubles are dealt with by the end of the Tower of Heaven arc, she's still frequently seen in armor, though she occasionally just wears a white shirt with a tie. The Ace : She is known as the best female fighter in a guild known for their incredible strength and skill. Even Natsu is scared senseless with the prospect of being punished by her. She's accomplished many feats deemed Beyond the Impossible by most characters over the course of the series, usually with the simple explanation that "it's because she's Erza". Action Fashionista : She has over 100 outfits, and has the ability to rapidly switch between the powered armors, bunny suits, catsuits, dresses, pajamas, etc. she stores elsewhere and summon them when needed. The Aloner : Since her escape from the Tower of Heaven, Erza is a lonely girl who has a difficult relationship with her guildmates. Around the time of Phantom Lord's demise, she's willing to join in the guild's crazy antics from time to time. Ambiguously Bi : She's had a number of perverted moments, and they all involve other girls. She's looked through Lucy's underwear, an Omake shows that she considers a Skinship Grope an essential part of bathing for girls, and while groping Mirajane, after which she had already forcibly scrubbed Juvia. In the Christmas Episode , Erza's reign of terror during the "master" game in which Erza keeps forcing other members to strip naked, she initially expresses disappointment at seeing Gajeel strip as she wanted to a girl naked. Also, during the Grand Magical Games arc, Lucy mentions that Erza frequently climbs into her bed at night to sleep with her. Nonetheless, the only person she's showed romantic interest in is Jellal. Ambiguous Disorder : Erza is extremely socially awkward and serious, and holds other people to such high standards that she tends to drive them away. Much of this can be explained by her traumatic childhood and the fact that she hasn't been very well socialized with other people. Armor Is Useless : Downplayed. While her armors have many uses, she wins an increasing number of fights wearing the Sarashi and flame-print pants combo that's explicitly stated to provide no protection. Asskicking Equals Authority : She earned her S-Class rank through rigid training, discipline, and a heartbreaking past . She also briefly serves as seventh guild master in Makarov's absence due to her ability to put the rest of the guild in line with a simple Death Glare . Attending Your Own Funeral : After she attempts to sacrifice herself during the Tower of Heaven's destruction, she has a vision of her own potential funeral where her own friends are deep in mourning over her death. The depressing sight is so affecting to her that when Natsu saves her life, she promises to take better care of it. Awesomeness by Analysis : She doesn't like revealing her full power right away in a fight, and would rather just use about as much as she needs to just win. She ends up heavily wounded in some of her battles because she just tanks whatever her opponents throw at her until she has a good grasp of the best way to take them down. Badass in Distress : She winds up being taken hostage by Tartaros and once again tortured , this time by Kyôka's Agony Beam . She's quick to take sweet revenge once Natsu and Lisanna break her free. Badass Transplant : As if her immense strength and arsenal weren't enough, her artificial-eye protects her from any eye-based magic such as petrification and illusionry . Berserk Button : Get between her and her Sweet Tooth and she'll make you will rue the day you ever met her. Big Eater : The anime spotlights her love of cake to the extreme. For instance, when she buys 50 cakes to celebrate Wendy and Carla's membership in the guild, she says only two are for them and the rest are for herself. The Big Girl : Erza fills this role when she's not acting as The Leader of the team, being the most physically powerful and often stepping up to take down The Dragon of any Arc Villain . Big "NO!" : Erza yells "No!" when Simon takes Jellal's blast meant for her and dies in her arms by the end of the Tower of Heaven arc. Blemished Beauty : She lost her right eye as a child while being tortured in the Tower of Heaven, so she had to get her missing eye replaced with an artificial one once she joined the Fairy Tail guild. She is still treated in the series as a Dude Magnet who is noted for her beauty. Boobs of Steel : Played humorously literally. She has a large bust like many women in the series, and displays superhuman speed and strength with her huge arsenal of weapons. Broken Ace : She is unmatched in strength, skill, and beauty in her guild. However, her past as a slave left her with many emotional issues that she never completely overcomes. Broken Bird : Her Dark and Troubled Past left her with such immense feelings of guilt and betrayal that, for a while, she trained to become a badass fighter. She gets over these issues after the Tower of Heaven's destruction, but every now and again, her past comes back to haunt her. Can't Bathe Without a Weapon : Due to how her Re-Equip magic works , Erza can instantly summon any weapon or armor she needs at an instant, even if she's Interrupted while bathing, which happened a lot as she does bathe quite often . Character Development : At the beginning, Erza is a stony-faced disciplinarian who punishes both Natsu and Gray for their constant bickering and also herself whenever she slips into quirky behavior. When Gray calls her out for her abrasiveness, she becomes more laid-back and cheerful, like her guildmates. Childhood Friend Romance : Implied to have one with Jellal, whom she greatly admired as a child to the point of blushing when asked if she had a crush. While his betrayal cut her deeply to the point where she was willing to kill him, it's her love for him that allows his redemption. The ending leaves it ambiguous whether they get together, but there's enough to imply that things are looking up for them. The Comically Serious : A lot of Erza's most hilarious moments involve her playing utterly absurd situations perfectly straight. Her deadpan seriousness makes it twice as funny when she goes along with whatever wackiness the rest of the guild is involved in. Conservation of Ninjutsu : When faced with over 100 enemies, she consistently comes out on top and always makes it look like child's play. Ironically, she says in supplemental material that challenging a 100-strong army was one of the harder challenges she'd faced. Contralto of Danger : She speaks with a deep voice as a result of being voiced by Sayaka Ohara and Colleen Clinkenbeard . Cool Big Sis : She acts as this towards her guildmates in her age range whenever she isn't beating the crap out of them. Covert Pervert : For such a serious and heroic character, she possesses her fair share of perverted outfits, even citing her Playboy Bunny costume as her favorite because of the ears, and is not above using her sex appeal to get what she wants. Cry Cute : About the only times she ever sheds tears is when she i
