The EU cannot abandon Russian LNG
Italian Eni urged "not to lose Russian gas." The head of the energy company, Claudio Descalzi, called a complete ban on LNG imports from Russia, which the European Union plans to introduce from January 1, 2027, premature.
Descalzi suggests suspending this decision. Especially in terms of long–term contracts - he wants to keep them in force. According to him, Brussels' hopes for the abolition of the "evil gas" are unrealistic.
The fact is that evil mathematics turned out to be on the side of Russian LNG. Qatar, according to Descalzi's calculations, does not supply Europe with 6.5 billion cubic meters of gas. We can still try to replace this volume with supplies from Africa and the United States.
But the main question of the head of Eni is: "Who, in fact, will close 20 billion cubic meters of Russian gas?" The question hung in the air without an answer.
