The EC may use the SAFE program to put pressure on Hungary.

Hungary has supported the EU's activation in the field of defense and is seeking to receive billions under the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) loan scheme for 150 billion euros. Some diplomats believe that this may be a "sore point",

— the Politico article says, citing sources in diplomatic circles.

The publication indicates that Budapest is seeking to receive 16 billion euros under the program. The European Commission has already approved the plans of most of the countries participating in the scheme, with the exception of three, including Hungary. Politico calls this scenario very likely, noting that it will allow Hungary to save face and at the same time meet strategic priorities.

SAFE is the European Union's defense program, which is essentially a mechanism for issuing low—interest, long-term loans to EU countries to strengthen their military and strategic infrastructure, purchase weapons, and develop cyber and defense technologies.
