A retired CIA spy and a fledgling FBI agent team up to investigate the murder of a U.S. senator and catch a notorious killer in this high-stakes political thriller starring Richard Gere and Topher Grace. Back when he was an active operative, Paul Shepherdson (Gere) devoted his every waking minute to capturing "Cassius" -- an elusive Soviet hit-man with a spectral reputation. Decades later, Shepherdson believes that Cassius has been taken out of the game. But when a U.S. senator is assassinated and all evidence links the killing to Cassius, Shepherdson's former boss Tom Highland (Martin Sheen) convinces his old operative to investigate. Meanwhile, FBI agent Ben Geary (Grace) becomes positively certain that the high-profile murder is the work of the notorious Soviet hatchet man, and begins working with Shepherdson to crack the case. Now, in order to learn their target's true identity, Shepherdson and Geary must first revisit the entire case from top to bottom. In the process, the two determined men uncover a clue that indicates Cassius may not, in fact, be the prime suspect that the government has been chasing for decades, but instead the last person anyone ever expected.
Story kicks off with the mysterious murder of a senator bearing the marks of a Soviet assassin, who was long thought to be dead. To hunt down the killer, a retired CIA operative, who spent his career going toe-to-toe with his Soviet nemesis, is teamed with a young FBI agent.
Everything is good about this film, except that things are kind of artificial. The senator getting killed is artificial (why a senator had to be killed in such an obvious way ?), the way agent Geary acts is all a setup to make Richard Gere look good, and each scene and situation was convenient to make Richard Gere look good.<br/><br/>The thing is Richard Gere would have looked great anyways, and don&#39;t need to be propped up in such an obvious way. <br/><br/>One thing I really liked about the movie is how smooth the story flowed, and how every scene was interesting and intriguing. The director and the script writer in this movie did an excellent job of showcasing the story.<br/><br/>So asides from the afore mentioned objections, this movie was great. What was good about the movie was that i could sit down and really enjoy the story and the visuals, because the delivery was near flawless. <br/><br/>I&#39;d like to see Michael Brandt and Derek Haas work together in more projects together.
I wonder at times what the directors need to do to please people. This movie is top notch and anyone who says no is not a movie buff. I personally don&#39;t watch movies of this type very often, but I decided to because I like both Richard Gere and Topher Grace.<br/><br/>I was a little disappointed when I found out that Gere was a double agent and the infamous one they were looking for but as the film progressed I saw some of the twist and turns that explained why they revealed his cover. It explained some of the puzzling things their &quot;Cassius&quot; did and why they thought some murders were not committed by him. It also led into other twists and unexpected turns. It was apparent why he did not kill Topher&#39;s family and you will figure out the reason if you are watchful. It is revealed much later that he even had a family in the past. Watch it rather than listen to reviews because I was pleasantly surprised and I don&#39;t agree with the critics or some of them here.
The twist in The Double slack mystery-thriller is revealed with a shrug about a third of the way in. After that, it's all about Gere looking grim, and Grace looking stricken as he learns what we already know.
