The Dawn Patrol Culture

What the dawn patrol means for California surf culture

The Culture

The dawn patrol -- the practice of surfing at first light before the onshore wind that Southern California afternoon typically produces deteriorates the surf conditions -- is the California surf cultural practice that most consistently produces the specific combination of the uncrowded lineup, the glass-surface conditions, the specific quality of the early light on the water, and the specific community of the other dawn patrol surfers who are there for the same reasons.

The Community

The dawn patrol community is the self-selecting community of surfers whose commitment to the early session is the filter that produces the specific lineup composition: the serious surfers, the working surfers who cannot surf at other times, and the dawn-preferring surfers whose relationship to the ocean is the relationship to the ocean at the specific hour that the rest of the world is not yet in it.

Surf LA Coverage

Surfing LA covers the dawn patrol because the accountability journalism of the surf culture requires covering the practices that define the culture relationship to the ocean, and because the dawn patrol is the practice that most consistently produces the relationship to the ocean that surfers identify as the reason they surf.
