I have been listening to Dar Williams this week -- specifically the progression from "Cry Cry Cry" (1996) through "The Honesty Room" through "My Better Self" (2005) -- as a way of tracking the specific development of a folk-singer-songwriter across a ten-year productive peak. What the retrospective shows: the voice has always been what it is, which is exceptional; the songwriting complexity increased across the period; and the specific relationship to political and social themes became more explicit and more confident as the period progressed.
