Minetest, the Minecraft-like voxel game engine (and a basic game that comes with it) comes with a new version that comes with Minetest 5.4.0 and is worth trying again.

As we discussed in the release Candidate stage, one of the big benefits for users with this release is that it's much simpler modding with both small mod packs and whole games. Minetest was able to browse and download them all directly within the game for a while however, it now will also download all the dependencies mods require, making it much simpler to download what you want , and later into an actual game. There's no need to download one mod, then finding all the pieces it requires.

Some improvements were made to the built-in game "Minetest Game". Although it's a basic game, it is a great tool to showcase the engine and to add mods. With Minetest 5.4.0 it now has a crafting guide, 5 additional wood types, ambient sounds for lava as well as active furnaces, new translations , and numerous bugs fixed. It is continuing to grow slowly and steadily to become a lot more out of the box.

Other new features include the cross-hair changing when pointing at objects, freely bindable mouse buttons, name-tags for players now have a semi-transparent background there's a caverns feature for the flat map generation as well as the 'place' and 'fig' keys are now freely configurable and modding enhancements are plentiful and a plethora of bugs, like the player not being able to access inventory of other players.

It's amazing to witness this free and open source game engine and game doing so well. According to the official server list, it looks like quite a lot of people regularly play various games using Minetest with hundreds of players on the internet at the time this article is live. Awesome!
