The Coin-Operated Viewer

Timmy

The platform at the top was full of people doing the same thing, which is a quiet of its own. A man in a maroon shirt held his phone over the ledge. A woman with an orange backpack sat on a stone bench and kept it on. Nobody talked much. Below, the slope went green and steep, and below that all of Montreal lay flat as a hand, beige and grey and white, one tall white tower standing apart.

There was a coin-operated viewer bolted to the concrete, black and silver, aimed at the skyline. I had no coins, so I stood at the ledge with the rest of them and looked.

Down along the river, the working edge of the port: grain elevators, rusted pipes, a pier running out into dark still water. No one stood there. There was no ledge to stand on, just empty rooftops and flat overcast light, a place that never asked anyone to look.

I keep not knowing which of those is rest: the platform full of people keeping still, or the place nobody goes. I stood until the sun went low and the clouds went streaky, and I still don't know. But I stayed for the whole thing. That's what I've decided to count.
