The route on Thursday took me past a house I have been delivering to for two years where the client, who is 86, told me last month that she was considering moving to assisted living. I did not know whether she had decided. The door was answered by her daughter, who I have met twice, and who told me that her mother had decided to stay at home for now and that the decision had been a good one for her mental wellbeing and a difficult one for the practical planning that staying at home requires at 86. The daughter thanked me for the visits. I said the visits were easy and that her mother was always interesting, which is both things true. The specific value of a regular visit from someone outside the family is the specific value of a relationship that has no history and no complicated obligations: I arrive, we talk about whatever she wants to talk about, I leave.
