The ChatGPT table that never turns into a table: the missing separator row

ChatGPT2Word

Ask ChatGPT for a comparison and you get a neat grid. Copy it into a document and you get lines of text with pipes. In a surprising number of cases the cause is not Word at all: the Markdown behind the grid is missing one line.

Pipe tables need a header separator

A GitHub-flavoured Markdown table is three things: a header row, a separator row, and body rows.

| Plan | Price | What you convert |
| --- | ---: | --- |
| Free | $0 | One paste at a time |
| Pro | once | A folder of Markdown files |

The second line is not decoration. It tells a parser where the header ends, and the colons set alignment: :--- is left, :---: is centre, and ---: is right. Remove that line, which people do when they "clean up" an answer, and most converters will refuse to guess. What you see is the same pipes you started with.

How to check in ten seconds

Look at the raw text, not the rendered chat. Every table needs:

  1. A header row with the same number of cells as the rest.
  2. A separator row of three or more dashes per cell.
  3. Body rows that do not contain an unescaped pipe inside a cell. If a cell needs a literal |, write \|.

Two other frequent causes are a blank line missing before the table (some parsers need one) and cells that contain line breaks, which pipe tables cannot hold.

Getting the table into Word as cells

Once the Markdown is right, you have three choices.

Paste Special as HTML works for small grids if you copy the rendered table. Convert Text to Table in Word works on pipe text if you pick the pipe as the separator and then delete the dashed row, which is fine for four rows and tiring for forty. A converter that reads the Markdown does the whole thing at once, and is the only option that keeps right and centre alignment from the colons.

ChatGPT2Word has a page for exactly this case: ChatGPT table to Word. It builds real Word tables with header shading and keeps the column alignment from the separator row. If you want the general workflow around it, the export guide covers headings, code, and math.

A good habit when the grid is going to a client

Add the separator back, paste, then open the Word table once and check that numeric columns are aligned and that no cell has swallowed two columns. Then run a style on the whole table instead of formatting cell by cell, so a later edit does not break the layout.

If the table came from a long answer, convert the whole answer instead of just the grid. A table lifted out of context is where the "what does this column mean" questions come from.
