I actually really like this album and could never figure out why it got so much flak when it came out. This is a great combination of the sound Machine Head pursued with their first two albums, along with a change to something that was more current for the time. Was it selling out? Maybe it was, but it still is a very good album. Also I can not fault a band for trying to do something different. Some great songs are included on this album including: Five and the Burning Red. Now the next album after this one is where Machine Head really lost their way and almost imploded as a band.

A lot Machine Head fans dislike it because of the nu metal sound but the album has some killer tracks on it. And it was made back before the lead singer became a blog mom.

first of all i wrould like to take the time to say tht i love machine head im just getting into them alot of people dnt like it because of the whole Nu metal approach they took bt theirs some good songs on there as well the blood sweat and tears. silver. the cover of message in a bottle if your just getting into machin head id recomend burn my eyes . the blackening.unto the locust or through the ashse of the empire this records got good moments bt its got alot of bad moments as well making the record very different

Great timing. Does anyone else notice the change of price daily? F.U. Corp Merica.

one of my fav cds of all time. from start to finish this cd is non stop

this is the 4th time i buy this album, it's a classic. anyone who's into MH'll tell you, this was their breakthru album. 5 stars all around.

A horrible album! Just not good. I was a huge M.H. fan before this came out. The highlight is the cover of Message in the bottle the rest of the album seems like the record label was in charge of the direction. I'm happy to say after one more bad album M.H. was back to making some of the most memorable metal albums of the last 20 years!

Disappointing experimental album.

The late 90's saw the start of a worrying trend in heavy metal, with several classic old-school bands suddenly incorporating elements of nu-metal into their sound. Slayer did it on 1998's hugely underwhelming 'Diabolus In Musica', with Bay Area heroes Machine Head following suit the next year with this, their third album. 'The Burning Red' represented a big departure for the band, with a stripped down sound and an alarming lack of solos, but the real bone of contention for old fans was Robb Flynn's rapped vocals on certain tracks. The album does contain some decent songs in 'The Blood, The Sweat, The Tears', 'I defy' and a nice cover of the Police's 'Message In A Bottle', but ultimately lacks the crushing heaviness, groove and killer riffs that won Machine Head legions of fans with their awesome debut 'Burn My Eyes and it's worthy follow-up 'The More Things Change'. 'The Burning Red' would become Machine Head's fastest selling album in the States, but alienated many of their original followers (not to mention friends like Kerry King) and continues to divide opinion to this day. Fans of Korn and Limp Bizkit will probably enjoy the record, but old-school metalheads should stick to MH's aforementioned first two albums and their 'comeback' records 'Through The Ashes Of Empires' and 'The Blackening'.

Not easy listening, a rich album

I went to this album after having listened a thousand times to "Into The Locust". There are nearly 2 decades between these CD. Today I feel that this album sounds like the rap and ratm period, though the Machine Head style is still there. After a couple listenings, I like this album. There is a cover of Police " message in a bottle " which is really interesting, it's like a lesson "how to play a song heavy".
